2010 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Santorini Black
Which engine?

Ive seen reports stating that there are 150 and 160 versions of the TD4. How do I tell which one is in my 2010 HSE?

it'll be the 150hp newer engine. Sounds like its gone a step backwards but its more evonomical and has more torque than the previous one.

If it is a MY 10 then it will have a 160 bhp TD4 engine. The change to 150bhp came with MY11 which went on sale in September 2010.

I have a MY2010 TD4.e, which I thought was the standard engine from 2010 onwards, and I also thought it was 150 bhp. I'm confused!

2010 is a wonderfully confusing manufacturing year for Freelanders. Most of the year would have been pre facelift cars without DPF and are rated at 158 bhp.
.
Then in later 2010 came the facelift 2011my car with DPF and engine power choice of 150 I'm manual or 150 and 190 with the autobox.
Mechanically the engines are the same but with subtle changes. The 2011 facelifts had a larger turbo with water cooled centre bearing, the EGR is very different and slightly bigger, the intake manifold conveniently lost the dreaded vacuum operated butterfly vanes. It also lost the pretty organ pipes on the plastic air pipe on top of the engine.
.
So as a guide if yours is pre facelift it's a 160 (158), and if its a manual facelift its a 150 and if its a auto facelift it could be 150 or 190.
The only difference between the 150 and the 190 is the software.
.
The above relates to UK spec cars only.
.
If anyone thinks I've got errors in the above please PM me and I will edit the above to correct errors.
.
Kind regards from Fred

To tell the difference look at Freelanders say 2007 - 2009 then look at a freely say 2012/3.
.
The front bumpers had the grill slimed down in height , headlamps gained the glass bullseye for the dip beam, the rear lights upper lens changed from red to white, as did the high level brake light, the boot handle went from short width heavy silver plastic to a full tailgate width body coloured slimmer handle with thin chrome finisher.
.
Beware members cars as many earlier cars get these cosmetic changes done, see Slanydore's posts.
.
Kind regards from Fred.

In simple terms, the pre-facelift cars had the short boot handle.

Facelift cars had the long handle with chrome insert.

Also look at the badging.

Pre facelift cars had the model code first :-

SE TD4
HSE TD4 and so on.

Facelift cars were the opposite :-

TD4 HSE
SD4 HSE and so on Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

If you have the short boot handle and the front bumper and grill as one piece then it is the 160bhp pre-facelift. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

I remember checking on Topix ages ago about my own engine size, 118 KW which is 160 BHP. I had a door latch replaced and the work note had the car down as a 150BHP engine.

I never knew about the boot handle etc. I will keep an eye out next time I see a newer FL2, there seems to be loads about at the moment! Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.
