Front Transfer Box Failure ... UPDATE page 3

So it turns out that my rear diff pinion bearing has not failed. Hoorah!
It's the front transfer box. Complete replacement £1300. No idea when such a part will be available to fit.

The silver lining? As the stupid garage couldn't give me a courtesy car at least I get to drive home tonight rather than get a lift from someone.

Oh, and because my car is nearly 4 years old the garage can't put in a claim to Land Rover for a contribution. It's down to me to call Customer Relations.

Is this the 'joy' of owning a Land Rover?

Stuart

Do you trust the ones that put such a diagnostic?
Why I'm asking?....
You are the first that is telling about such a malfunction... The transfer box is very simple and very robust....

so sorry to hear of the expensive repair needed. this is just the thing I dread. Is this a dealer that quoted you this or is it an independent garage? Is the price for a complete replacement? or is there a possibility of a repair of the broken parts? Don't always take the dealer's word for it. There might be a cheaper way around it somehow. I know you can get a rear diff repair kit now for £150 but not sure about transfer boxes or the like. Perhaps enquiring about a quality reconditioned one might lower the bill slightly? I don't know, just thinking aloud really!

If the car is under 100,000 miles you could think about taking out a land rover approved warranty. I believe they do them for any car up to 10 years old. Was something like £500 a year the time I enquired. It won't help with this particular repair but will prevent other large repair bills in the future.

I currently have one with Evans Halshaw where I bought the car. Its 2007 reg but they had no hesitation in approving the Flywheel replacement a few weeks ago.

You have had an unfortunate experience to be sure, but I have to defend Mav71 and "the joy of owning a Land Rover".

Thanks folks.

Alex,

You raise an interesting point. The dealer used listening equipment to come to the conclusion that the transfer box is at fault.
Even they are surprised. Do you think it is worth trying to get a second opinion?
They reckoned it was the diff but when they had it on their rolling road or whatever they found that it was coming from that area.

Ghawk2005 - This is the cost of a full replacement. Apparently they don't repair them. Perhaps I should ask some of the independents for a quote or second opinion.

Stevie5tapes - I'll be calling customer relations tomorrow and see how I get on with that. Failing that I'll try Mike.

Tigger - I love my Freelander. The £33k miles I've done have been great fun. My comment about the joy of Land Rover ownership is in reference to a lot of people who love Land Rovers despite some of their problems. Perhaps I've been looking in on the Defender forum too often.....
As for Mav71, my problem with his useless post, 'I can't comment about your problem but I'm alright Jack' was a waste of his time, my time and in fact sounded like he was rubbing it in.
Seriously, why did he bother replying? I've had a really cr4p day to be honest, Land Rovers aside and that was the first reply I got? P* off.

Stuart

Stooby, try not to let it get to you too much, I've had ford focus's which are supposed to be a reliable car, and yes I was quite lucky with the ones I had but friends had turbo failures, flywheel replacements, suspension issues, mate had one on an audi for £2000 fixing cost, even BMW have problems. I remember reading about pre-2003 turbo failure epidemic quite a few years back which put me right off them!

The way I look at it, I'd rather have a car I totally love and have dreamt of owning for ages with a few expensive repairs here and there than to have a horrid eco box that does 80 to the gallon and never goes wrong that I just HATE driving every day!

this might be of interest for the future Smile
Take care!

Bit of a long shot here for you, But looking over your past posts you asked about a strange noise from the front end (squeal).
Did you take it in to the dealer to make them aware of the problem, If so did they solve it or fob you off?

All im thinking is,If you did report it to the dealer but it never got solved could it be related and if so would that problem of fallen in to the warranty period if so you could have a valid point to be made.

Hope this thought my fall into place for you

Well.....,

Ghawk2005- true words spoken there. I once had a new Mini Cooper S
That was in the garage more than I was driving it. I'm sure once I get the
Freelander fixed And get over it all I'll feel the love again.

Steve t - now then. As it happens the squeal I mentioned went away
So I failed to get anything done with it apart from check my brake pads.
It then came back yesterday on the way home from teesdale. An hour or
Two on the M6 with a hell of a squeal. It stopped on left turns or if I pressed
The brake pedal. So I brought it up today at the garage. They reckon it could
Be a sticking caliper. Hmmm. Oh and the tailgate switch failed at the weekend
Too so that needs fixing as well. £1500 for all three fixes....
Oh, and when they gave me the car back the near side mirror wouldn't
Fold or unfold. They're not sure why but reckoned they'd fix it too.
It was fine yesterday.

Oh and work today was, well.....

Stuart.
