Noise from rear wheels when turning from a standing start

Good morning Gents, Newbie with a problem here I'm afraid.

I've recently had the rear pinion bearing replaced due to it failing, and since then when I pull away whilst turning (ie pulling out of the end of a road) I get what can be described as a loud grinding noise from the rear wheels, not both wheels or every time but it is very disconcerting.

Is there anything obvious that the garage are missing? The guy is a gearbox & diff specialist but not LR - the bearing is now silent again with no noise from the drivetrain and no warnings on the dash.

Cheers in advance Thumbs Up

Had exactly the same. When I took Fl2 into first garage replaced wheel bearings but this did solve the problem. So took car to landrover agent and he replaced diff. They said that LR bought load of cheap bearings.
New noise from rear when turning left or right. Took it back and they vented it, cured noise for a little less than a day. Occurs when turning sharpish left or right and accelerating slightly more than normal. I can prevent the noise occurring by being very gentle with the acceleration. Going in again after Christmas. "Land Rover bought a old of cheap bearings". Sorry but that is a load of old rubbish. Companies like Land a Rover would not go out and "buy" a batch of cheap products.

There was an issue with diff bearings. It was not a case of cheap bearings but perfectly good bearings that were not up to the job in many cases. This is something that LR took very seriously and replaced the bearings with up rated versions. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. noisy diffs

The suggestion that landrover fitted a batch of cheap bearings came from a landrover agent not me. If Landrover had amended the problem on later models then they should have done the honourable thing by their customers by recalling all the previous models and changed the diff bearings. If it wasn't so much of a problem why then are there so many owners on forums complaining about it. My particular problem is not with replacing the diff but the inherent problems after, which is the noise when turning left or right when accelerating after the new diff has been fitted. I don't appear to be on my own with this either. I am told that after fitting the new diff oil has to be injected by syringe the engine run and then a small portion of the oil removed or something of that ilk. Seems an odd progress in mechanical works to me. I will submit my findings after they have had another go at it.

I was told by the service department at a LR main dealer that the problem is not with the bearing itself but with the bearing becoming contaminated due to ' the paint on the inside of the diff casing flaking away '. Never heard that anywhere else and cant see it being true either ! FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green

Hi there,

Going back to the origonal grinding noise coming from the rear when turning, i had exactly the same problem when i baught my 07 18 months ago.

I had the pinion bearing replaced due to excessive noise when driving at moderate speed, a few days after i purchased it from an indie in Congleton. On return the noise had gone but the exact same scrapping / grinding noise when accelerating out from a "T" junction took it's place, the tighter the corner the louder the noise.

It culminated in a loud cracking sound, and the noise disapeared. Curious i took a look underneath and the near side rear drive shaft could be waggled up and down about 50mm, it turned out i'd snapped the drive shaft fingers off inside the diff housing, and hense had no 4 wheel drive, only the front wheels drove the car.

After taking it back for the second time, it turned out that the haldex had ceased up, and wasn't allowing any slip when cornering. It was replaced with a new one, luckily it was under warranty, so didn't cost me a penny.

Hope this helps

Happy christmas Stay Dirty

There seems to be a common theme to many of these diff/Haldex problems: Indie repairs diff -> Haldex breaks.

Maybe the indies are doing/not doing something during the diff repair which damages the Haldex? The Haldex is, after all, mounted on the front of the diff and must be removed to get at the diff bearing, and with its hydraulic pump and electronics it's a fairly complex component. There doesn't seem to be a similar occurrence of LR dealer repairs diff -> Haldex failure events.

Just something to think about before letting an indie loose on your diff!

Just picked up on this thread.
Last night coming home, turned left out of a junction, fairly tight and pulled away fairly quickly. there was a loud bang from the rear of the car.
Checked all round, can see no damage / leaks etc. Car drove home as normal.
see from above that someone had a broken driveshaft.
So, if i get someone to pull away slowly in the car and I look under the back, I should see both driveshafts turning. If so, I assume that the diff nad the driveshafts are ok? 2011 XS SD4, Indus Silver (Getting to love it more and more)

Both driveshafts turning doesn't necessarily mean that they're OK. In the case quoted above the problem was that the 'fingers' had broken off inside the diff housing, and thus no drive was reaching the rear wheels. The driveshaft would still have been turning, however, due to the wheel at the other end turning.

One way to check the driveshafts is to jack up each rear wheel in turn (with the other wheels securely wedged as you'll need the handbrake off) and see if you can turn the wheel manually. If the wheel turns easily there may be a problem with the driveshafts or diff.

Hi

Just to add some detail to my last post, the diagram above hopfully explains where the half shaft broke, between the shaft and the bearings which take the drive from the CV housing to the half shaft.

PAB is correct to say there was no external visible clue to say the shaft was broken, as the road wheel rotated the drive shaft, not the other way round, and the rubber boot kept everything in place.

PAB's explanasion of a diagnosis is far the best way, but i did the following:-

I did two things to satisfy myself the shaft was broken, the first was to find a piece of muddy verge up a country lane, and gave it the beans for a few yards to see if the four wheel drive would kick in. In my case it didn't, and only the front wheels spun. The traction control light on the dash also went nuts.

I then looked underneath and waggled the half shaft and the broken side had much more play compared to the good side.

If you have a broken drive shaft, it may be a symptom of a bigger problem, as mine was a ceased Haldex.

I hope it isn't, as a new haldex isn't cheap --- Confused Good luck Stay Dirty
