Nokian

Hi,
Anyone tried Nokian winter tyres on a Freelander. They get good reviews.
Cheers

Not had them on a freelander as yet but ran them on a Volvo xc90 for 4 years all year round and we're excellent , they were WRG2.

I think I'll get a set of Nokians.
My rims are 19".cant decide whether to get a set of 18" rims and tyres or just swap over my tyres for the winter?

Fitted the WRG 3s a couple of weeks ago, so far so good, might be in a better position to give an update after this week, if the forecasts are correct ! Mr. Green

I got a silly quote for winter tyres so thought sod it, never needed them before so will stick with what I have and spend the money somewhere else.

I was impressed with my quote, I could have saved £30 but then have to pay to have them fitted elsewhere Ner Ner p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

I had the same dilemma, the 18" are slightly cheaper but I think 19" look better so I bought a second set of 19" rims in a different style and the Nokian WR SUV 3's will go on them at the end of the week. That way next year I can change them myself (as long as I remember the copper slip to stop them sticking to the hub Thumbs Up )

I also don't like the idea of having the tyres refitted each year, all that stretching can't be good for them, although maybe that's just my imagination.

I got the tyres from Oponeo seemed the cheapest by far.

Google freelander 19"wheels you'll get a few ebay results plus a few breakers. If you can't get any cheap enough (due to demand now pushing up the price) then get 19" tyres and stick them on your current rims and next year maybe get a different style rim to use in the summer or another set exactly the same. FL2 HSE SD4, black, privacy glass, spoiler, 19' diamond cut alloys.

I have been running a set of WR SUV 3's for the last few weeks. Once the release agents had worn off they seem fine, comfy, quiet and grippy in the wet. This is 235/70 x 16 on a set of LR 16" alloys I procured. I can only compare them to other winter tyres I have had such as Goodyear Ultragrips, other Nokians and some Nankang SV2's (not as iffy as you may expect imho)

The acid test will be when it gets colder and the roads are cold / greasy but I don't expect them to let me down. They also seemed to cope okay with some light boggy grass / mud travel last week as well.

Does it make any difference drive wise whether 17, 18, or the factory 19" rims are used. Read on other forums that smaller are better; don't understand why that should be if tyres are same type?

That seems to depend on who you ask and how they're feeling when you ask them! I've not seen any demonstrations which prove it either way. FL2 HSE SD4, black, privacy glass, spoiler, 19' diamond cut alloys.

Doesn't matter what size really for Winters, the smaller size you can get usually means they are cheaper, a lot of the ones who do more serious off road prefer the smaller sizes, one, as its cheaper, two, a 17" Freelander tyre will have a larger, side profile compared to a 19" giving the rim more protection, imho. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

My FL2 runs on 18's normally with Pirelli Scorpion Verdes and the change to 16 in ride comfort was quite noticeable due to the higher sidewall. People usually recommend smaller winter tyres as in 'thinner' or 'skinnier', I'm not sure the height (profile) matter that much its just that the two go hand in hand. A thinner tyre cuts into snow better than a fat wide one i.e. a 195 section tyre is better than a 235 section in snow, that's how I understand it anyway. Better is of course subjective though and for most bad weather road usage I'm pretty sure it wont make a lot of difference.

Certainly I used to drive older cars with skinny tyres everywhere in the snow with no issues, but over the last 10 years all the fat tyred ones I have had have really struggled to get a grip in the snow on summer tyres Smile

fat tyres and traction control have made modern cars struggle, I remember Mrs G phoning to say the roads were terrible and our A3 (bags of power and fat fat tyres) wouldn't drive her home, I told her to switch off the traction control and she made it home.
