The car is controlled by a complex network of modules (i.e. computers of various kinds), sensors, actuators and displays. Both hardware and software can (will!) contain bugs which, under certain circumstances, can cause unexpected and incorrect effects. The trigger can be anything from events happening in a certain sequence, or with particular timing, through to low battery voltage or even external effects such as strong electrmagnetic fields. The result can be incorrect displays, incorrect modes selected, or even a complete crash of parts of the system.
Usually these kinds of problems clear by themselves after a stop/start cycle, but sometimes a hard reset (by disconnecting the battery) is required. Or sometimes some other, unusual action is required - I once had the car start up in M&R mode on the terrain response, and every time I switched it off it turned itself back on after a couple of seconds. Eventially it was pressing the HDC button which cleared it, switching the terrain response back to normal! It's computers - these things just happen! (...says a software engineer!)
Of course you may be unlucky and something mat actually have failed, but it's more likely its just confused itself and a re-start will clear it.
