less bother with a hover

had a go on my mates hovercraft today, here he is terrifying my son on the death defying thing Laughing

They race in the UK championship. and they all had a get together on a local farm.

I had a few laps in one of the things, well sort of. it isnt easy to stay on the designated course, wind them out and they really speed along, Its eerie over rough land you brace for impact but of course the impact doesnt happen as you are flying.
the handlebars lead you to believe the things can be steered around obstacles this is indeed totally untrue, steering is achieved by leaning nearly right out of the side of the hull. slow speed manoeuvring isnt possible , you have to learn flat out

Sorry about the quality of the picture --- This is my attempt (with a couple of mates) to build a hovercraft from scratch back in the mid 1960's in my garage in Norwich. It never got finished as at the time I was in the RAF and got posted to Germany.

However I believe the construction wood lives on as fitted wardrobes in a house in Norwich, as I had to hurriedly dismantle it.

It would have been powered by 2 Villiers Motorcycle engines. The main lesson that I learnt from this experience was that the man I bought the engines from thought that they were a lot more valuable when selling them, than they were when I sold them back to him.

In retrospect, I think that the lack of engineered propulsion parts would have made it hard to finish.

We did however build a working, electrical driven, model hovercraft for use at a Battle of Britain Show, it attracted quite a crowd, as the idea was very new.

Most of our calculations were taken from a book on how to design sailing boats, and sails. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

|Excellent write up and about right too.
I attended a hovercraft day near cirencester many years ago and had all day thrashing around in them, mostly sideways and out of control but as said your waiting for the bump and it never happens.
It was a fab and memorable day.
No pics unfortunately as it was a firms outing as a relationship building day and no mobiles Jaguar x-type sport gone
