M+S tyres are all year round tyres. Only tyres with a Snowflake Mountain symbol are Winter tyres. |

Some all season tyres have the snowflake symbol not just winters. |

Thats a confusing statement. Tyres that carry the Snowflake symbol have to meet specific performance levels. M+S don't. What dictates a tyre is an all season tyre?

The snowflake symbol is a winter tyre standard but if other non winter tyres meet the standard they can carry the snowflake symbol. An example is the goodyear vector 4 seasons which has the symbol, (i am on my third set as they suit all conditions). As far as i know the m and s just denotes a type of tread pattern/side sips which help a bit in loose surface conditions but are generally useless in ice/snow.

If a 'non-winter tyre' meets a winter tyre standard then it can carry the snowflake symbol.....which designates it as a winter tyre.

Goodyear says this about its vector 4 seasons.

Sounds like some marketing bod at Goodyear has said "lets call our winter tyre an all year round winter tyre". I would imagine it outperforms non-winter tyres below 7 degrees and is outperformed by non-winter tyres above 11 degrees....just like all other manufacturers winter tyres. Sounds like marketing BS to me. |

It's more likely the silica content and tread pattern. More silica than a summer tyre and less than a winter.

This tyre shows a snowflake, it is not a true winter tyre
