it doesn't use the air conditioning ? When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car

The manual says something along the lines of "when econ mode is active the climate control will attempt to cool the car as much as possible without using the air conditioning"

Advantages:
Better fuel economy
Increase compressor life

Disadvantages:
Won't cool the car lower than the ambient temperature
Climate control doesn't work as well
No dehumimidifying (won't stop windows from steaming up)
If you don't use it for a while the seals in the air con may perish and gas may escape.

Summery, just leave it alone... The fuel economy increase will be marginal just slow down by a few mph.[/quote] Freelander 2, 2014 Dynamic SD4 Santorini Black

Economy mode works well when ambient temperature is lower than the required internal temperature and the car is being heated by the sun. It also saves you from trying to cool the planet when driving with the windows open!

Its the same as having a car with no air conditioning system. Exmple, your just using the blower motor drawing in air from outside. The next step would be to turn on the aircon compressor which will use more fuel and quickly cool the air entering the cabin Thumbs Up

Which is a big plus with the Freelander, the best car I've had that clears a misted screen in seconds and keeps it that way.
