Gearbox Oil...

I have a small vibration in the gearbox at certain times and the dealer suggested changing the gearbox oil. Apparently there is about 7litres in there. Then they told me the price...$130....a litre. That's $910 for the oil alone Shocked Do they make it from the distilled tears of unicorns or something?

According to the spec sheet I have the required oil is Esso JWS3309 US. I would shop around a bit - if you can find a good independent transmission specialist talk to them (assuming you don't need to protect a warranty, of course). That price seems extremely high even by dealer standards, although it's not easy to find a price online for that particular oil. Equivalents (of which there seem to be several, including one from Mobil) and other AT oils seem to be a fraction of that price!

Mate I hope so. That's why I told them I would think about it. They had none of their pure brew in stock so I would have to go back tomorrow. My warranty ends next week but oil not covered of course.

Hey thanks for the spec pab. I can get 4 litres of JWS 3390 type oil for $66. That's more like it. Smile

Pleased to be of help, but I'm no oil expert so I would check that the one you're looking at really is compatible.

FYI this is the spec sheet for the transmission oils:
