Selling your photos.....

Morning all,

Bit of a brain wave this morning (or not), I've got a habit of snapping sunsets, sunrises and other weather related sky-scapes.

Got a handful now that I'm really proud of. Has anyone ever sold any photographs, as in copies of, for people to use as pictures, privately as a sideline or to any websites etc? Trendy canvasses are all the rage I see, not looking for millions but certainly £15-20 per one and if I can sort something through a local printer, even better.

Any thoughts?? I know I will need a website and maybe PayPal integration which I'm not too hot on as well as some copyright info.

Thanks Thumbs Up 2013 FL2 - Black Edition Auto

We use to print on canvas and sell locally. This site was useful for showing customers our gallery...

http://www.clikpic.com/

Has PayPal integration and so on, maybe worth a look.

The other route is istockphoto and suchlike which is saturated imo.

Thanks for that, that's a good price too.

I'll see what my local photography/printer man shop says about prints and go from there.

Don't expect to make a living from it, there are some very swish looking websites with stunning photo's, the 'togs behind them rarely make much money, often subsidised by offering photographic training etc.
I have many of my pictures in competitions, those on my flickr page, occasionally people come along and ask about using pictures, I have had book covers and little things like that. Never done anything commercially, although recently was involved with a book about a local artist, I took over 800 pictures and out of 240 in the book, 206 are mine, all done voluntarily to raise money for our local library, made quite a few grand.

Good luck with the venture and be careful with the website, make sure your images are marked and low res so they cannot be printed.

There are also better mediums on which to print, canvasses are waining in my opinion and now you can look at printing direct onto acrylic, aluminium etc.

I use DSCL in Manchester, they have an online ordering system along with their own colour profiles, I use their profiles and a monitor calibration device, Colour Spyder, what I see on the screen is exactly the same as what comes back from the printer.

Lets have a look at some and be prepared for constructive crit Thumbs Up

Haha don't know if I dare post them! I might get flamed!!

That book sounds impressive, is it available online to buy or sample view?

It's by no means my intention to make a living, just had a couple of comments from work colleagues saying they would like a larger photo. They are just simple sky snaps, nothing fancy, but I've seen far worse on canvas in various shops!!

I suppose really they mean more to me, because I took them! I might get some printed for myself and see how they look first. 2013 FL2 - Black Edition Auto

I'm by no means an expert and don't have the posh kit, but I like the idea of these bigger. They need a little editing and tweaking for sure. The collection is growing and yes they are fairly amateur I know.

The colours in the first one are great, crop off the land at the bottom its just a black nothingness, then it looks much better, the second is spoilt by the wires.

My thoughts are I see nothing special or outstanding enough to think wow I'll have that on my wall. Sad

With tweaking you might be able to gain something on a personal collection, if there was something of interest in the photo the sunlight giving the golden glow then the colours would have been nice with the colours in the clouds

I shall have a play with the photo editing stuff I have, I'm sure I could remove the wires......carefully.

npinks - that's appreciated to be honest, it's only from comments this idea popped into my head, these photos are on my Facebook and the comments received there. I shall perhaps stick to impressing myself only and improve my skills over time Thumbs Up 2013 FL2 - Black Edition Auto

The photos look OK, I'm no expert though. I enjoy taking photos but at the moment I'm just using my iPhone 5, looking to get a good but reasonably priced camera fit for a novice at some point this year. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

I guess ive been fortunate and made some money from my photographs, though in the last 18 months things have got a lot more difficult with the mark up and sales noticably less.

I sell my images through my website (alaong with a friend) and through a local gallery where i live. Ive also sold images for book covers, Christmas cards and promotional uses. Prices have ranged from £20 upto £150 per image. My best result was selling ten 36"x24" framed prints (around £800 in value) and made myself £350.

Its certainly paid for some equipment ive bought and id be out taking pictures anyway so its been a bonus.
Entering competitions is a good place to start and submitting images to the local papers is also another good idea. While they dont pay for the images, ive had sales from people phoning the paper and asking where they can get the print from.

If you upload images to a website, just keep the images small and mark them someway (watermark or similar)

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
