In all honesty I'd be more interested in a chip to improve fuel economy!!!

We chip tuning generally offers this as well......but the problem is taht because of teh extra power you make full use of it which makes your fuel economy worse.

A couple of things which quite often are noticed with chip tuning over teh standard engine mapping is better fuel economy (when driven teh same as a non-chipped vehicle) and smoother power delivery compared to the standard.

I cannot understand why anyone would want their new FL2 to be chipped when it works excellent as is., is it to be able to screech from a standstill, wear the clutch out quicker want frequent change of tyres? Crying or Very sad Freelander 2 - SE

Jimbo, go try a chipped turbocharged vehicle and you'll soon see why. No shifting required for overtaking, just simply go as the power band is wider.

It's not for everyone, and whilst you'll improve your standing start performance the biggest gain is for general driving.....but you truly can't appreciate the effects until you drive a chipped vehicle.

If you wish to dump the clutch from the traffic lights whether the car is chipped or not you are going to add significant wear to items like the clutch, but if you use the power during 'on-the-move' driving then they'll be no adverse effects. My chipped A3T I've run for 5 years with a chip and the clutch is still going well, and I have not treated it well Twisted Evil

You could ask yourself why LR offer the TDV8 as well as the TDV6 and why the standard FFRR and then a Supercharged version....simple, because of the power difference and with that comes an improved driving experience, which is what a chip almost gives you for a lot less money.

I have to agree with Gambba - something good can always be made that little bit better from a bit of tweaking Thumbs Up 08 Santorini Black HSE manual with DAB and privacy glass

Explain this further, switch what dial? to Sand?

I really found this topic interesting. I have a XR6 Turbo ute, had it custom tune and wow the pwer difference was amazing. Now runs a 13 sec flat 1/4 mile. Safe to the engine and no warranty issues.

Would seriosuly like to know if the LR can be custom tune safely.

the terrain responce dial on the fl2, changes the setting on the sensitivity of the accelorator

Slightly more sluggish on Mud and ruts, more responsive on sand mode.

Staitionary/nuetral. In normal or mud and ruts, set your accelorator to 2000rpm, keeping your foot in the exact same place switch the dial too sand mode

You will see the rev's increase showing its more senstive in sand and mud and rut.

Don't get this confused with a actual remap, you want to speak to the site sponser bell autos on that, he has a switchable one that sounds great Thumbs Up

My view is that if its so simple why dont the OEMs do it as part of original spec. The only time I would consider re-mapping the engine ECU would be to smooth out the torque/HP curves ie Defender fitted with TD5 or if the repair bill for cylinder head/transmission/driveline did not dent my finances.
On a Land Rover which has been tested in extremis if you never take a up torqued motor off road your drive line may cope but the heart bleeds for all those shafts and joints at max articulation/max torque. Remember things like Toerag and its Porsche parents ECUs are programmed to power back when off road otherwise big bang! still pining for my 3dr, no removeable hardtop, no drop glass tailgate, no roof rack, no pockets everywhere to stow all that man kit

I read not so long ago it is to do with the fact LR have to program the ECU to take into account the difference in fuel throughout the world, instead of programming ECU to each and every country Very Happy Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

Remember every car is different, even if the are same model. Some have more power some less. But i would only custom tune a car, if i new the tuner was really good, new the limits of the car so didnt over tune and if i could flash it back before a service so that my warranty would not be void.

But each to their own. I bought the LR because i love everything about it. ( Apart from no Sat Nav or Blue Tooth) Censored

But if I can safely get a tune to get more power and better fuel economy out of it, i will
Thumbs Up

The Dealer I got mine from pointed out that if you put the terrain selector onto Sand, you get a performance improvement as the engine management system is trying to keep the wheels spinning.

Try it, I was suprised at the increase.

This definately makes a noticable difference to performance.
Anyone know what effect using the sand setting has on MPG and if left in that setting long term, will it do any harm? FL2 TD4 XS Santorini
