Whining noise !

I' borrowed the car today not driven it for weeks, 2009 Auto, there appeared to be a whining noise( not dissimilar to an electric motor ) that was in synch with acceleration, no drop off in performance I tried driving it softly and it was hardly there gave it some gas and the whining " spooled up " any thoughts ? 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Turbo.
Did I read somewhere about a bulkhead grommet coming loose that made the turbo nose more noticeable or was that on another site Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Hi,

Try another drive with the air con completely turned off, that's everything off inc the fan. I had similar 18 months ago, not on the Landy but my 2.2d Jag, turned out to be the air con compressor, not exactly cheap replacement, but much better than the turbo! Kola is the big solid black German Shepherd, Dobbie is.......a breed you've never heard of......yet;)

Could also be clogged up power steering pump reservoir.
I'd get it looked at pronto, sometimes you can get away with changing the reservoir. Keep driving it and it could cost a new pump or even worse a rack also.

I'd also go with the steering pump. Could also be the aux belt tensioner - mine made a weird whining noise shortly after the pump was done and I thought it was going again - the LR mechanic said he'd never heard one like it before.
Curiously, the pump was done under extended warranty, but I had to pay for the belt tensioner.

i would go with the Air Con compressor, mine was exactly the same as you describe, turn off the aircon and nothing, switch it back on and the whining comes back. Had mine replace under warranty about 3yrs back. All working fine now

I have this whine too, was told by a dealer that it was just the normal turbo noise...

I'll try turning off the ac on my next trip. FL2 2011 SD4 XS in Galway Green

well i don't know what to say the whooshing whining noise has stopped. Now I know my wife never turns the aircon on ( 20 years of Defender habits-she would have flip up air inlets under the screen if she could), so is there any chance that not running the aircon for 3 or 4 months , then me driving it and turning it on cold make the compressor squeal ?? 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Been into the dealers, checked over no noise whatsoever Sad she got it back having paid 36 quid for a set of front wipers " to save me the time" ! And a 60000 mile (service bill ) on a car with 37k that would make the Sultan of Brunai wince Rolling with laughter when will LandRover adopt condition based servicing like the up market German Auto companies ? 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership
