Dambusters

Great flypast today for the 70th anniversary. Doesn't matter how many times you hear the story, it's amazing every time. _________________

Hear hear.
Every time I've seen a Lanc, it's made me realise what a sitting duck they must have been.
The poor brave souls must have known that most of them would never return.

Agreed Thumbs Up

Funnily enough (although I can't remember it word for word), Christopher Eccleston's Doctor said in an episode something along the lines of "The German war machine rolled across Europe flattening everything in it's path until one tiny damp little island said no. No, not here!" LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Want to experiance a lttle of what the Dambusters experienced, have a look at the video on here taken this afternoon miind you, it's in daylight, there not flying at 30 feet above the water and no ones shooting at them. But still would have given my right arm to have been in there this afternoon

England 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Stornoway Grey

It's sad to think that for years Bomber Command wasn't properly recognised for the massive contribution it made at huge cost in lives; and Arthur Harris has never been properly honoured for his work. Many Britons wouldn't be alive today but for his leadership and the sacrifices made by those brave men and women. Although WSC's a great hero of mine, Churchill's treatment of Harris certainly wasn't his finest hour.

Just watched BBC's coverage of the memorial at Scampton this evening. Very moving.

Respect and profound thanks from one very grateful person not quite old enough to remember the war but brought up very much in its aftermath. Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

Thumbs Up wasn't named after us for nothing.

There were people there at 5am apparently, best time was last Tuesday, they did a trial run with no crowds, sadly I was elsewhere or would have gone.

Some pics here, not mine though http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=483644

Respect for anyone that puts their life on the line to save others, but to do it in a plane knowing that they are in the tail end with some high power rounds bear down on their ass is worth a Bow down Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

You might want to catch this tonight...

I agree whith all that's been said. We don't know how lucky we are to be living in benign times without fear of invasion and finding yourself in a job that has such a short life expectancy.
What gets me though, is it true they don't teach kids about this stuff any more? I've been horrified to hear that kids don't even know who won the second world war!

Anyway, did anyone see this documentary last year?

http://www.channel4.com/programmes/dambust...ncing-bomb

Basically some dude decides to recreate the bouncing bomb and test it from an aeroplane. Of course
no air authority would allow such a thing and no pilot would attempt such a dangerous task ....except for the Canadians of course. It's worth a watch.
