Just thought I'd post an update to this topic.

Unfortunately I was unable to get any decent pictures to post but as a final outcome, the steering wheel has been replaced FOC.

LR Customer Care looked into it and were adamant that the wear was "down to some external influence" like a cleaning product or something. However, although they "would not replace it under warranty", they agreed to "stand 100% cost of replacement and would speak to the dealer to see if they would do the fitting FOC". Which they did (Hatfields, Liverpool )

Phrases in quotes are verbatim. All the conversations seemed to be very measured and LRCC were very particular in saying that it was not being replaced under the warranty. Not really sure why this was unless they're covering themselves against setting a president.
Ah well, never mind. All's well that ends well, and thank you LR. I just hope the replacement doesn't go the same way.
Moral of the story is; if you get knocked-back on a claim, push further. You never know, you might get lucky.

Glad to hear that you got your problem sorted.

Was your previous wheel leather or plastic?

It was the plastic imitation leather-look one.
The grain effect was worn down to the base layer which kind of looked like a rough suede!

You must have very rough hands, try doing the washing up using Fairy Liquid.
