Drivetrain Whine

So, over the last few days I've developed a whine from the rear of my vehicle. Initial thoughts were wheel bearing but there doesn't appear to be any play in the wheel and the whine is much more noticeable under load, particularly going up hill. This has lead me to think that it's the diff bearing issue.

The threads I've read about this seem to be people who'd had the diff issue at quite low mileage. However, I've just ticked over 75k. It's booked in Farnell Land Rover next week for 5yr service so I've asked them to investigate the drivetrain whine too.

I've seen some people talk of problems with the Haldex unit too but I don't know what these issues are or how they manifest. Any comments welcome.

Dave

I don't know if it has. I've only had the vehicle 6 months but it's always been serviced at a LR main dealer so it should've had it. I'll be checking though when it goes it for service.

Update: Symptoms have developed somewhat and the ride has become very unsettled, even from a standing start. There's also some noticeable vibration under heavy breaking. I'm thinking this is more likely to be a wheel bearing but with no experience of one wearing out, I'm unsure. Can anybody advise if they've had these symptoms? What are the symptoms of wheel bearing failure? I've had the rear nearside wheel jacked but can't detect any lateral play in the wheel.

Thanks.

It is rare for a wheel bearing in the throws of failing to be detectable by play at the wheel. Normal symptoms are a whine which alters in tone and volume with road speed and alteration in volume when you turn. Try driving with the noise most audible and then turn one way or the other. If the noise changes then odds on it is a wheel bearing. it is possible to detect a dodgy wheel bearing by jacking up the car and spinning the wheel by hand listening/feeling for roughness.

If it is not a wheel bearing and the noise is definitely from the back, then the diff is the main suspect but it may be worth checking the propshaft U/J bearings for play. A knackered U/J will cause vibration. John

I had a similar noise not so long ago, turned out to be a Tyre! Try swapping the rears for the front, this will move the whine if it is indeed a tyre.

What tyre's are you on? I am on wranglers and the noise started around 5mm  MY2014 SD4 XS

my car has a 'whine ' which is hardly noticable at 30 mph but gets louder at higher speeds
I did notice that it was also louder when I was on the road with boot spare wheel cover missing, so I am
guessing it is something amiss with the drive train ,
my local mechanic had a look while doing a service and he said everything externally is ok
i have a stainless steel thin plate on the towbar , i wonder could this be vibrating , its the right sort of noise and low
enough to catch the undertow draft . i might remove it and see what happens

Vehicle is currently in at Farnell LR Bradford who've confirmed the diff bearings and will be doing the first line repair. Will take a few days for parts to arrive but I can keep the courtesy FL2 in the mean time. Excellent service so far!

Hi sorry I didn't answer sooner , been on the sick with a bad back
I removed part of the tow bar which took some getting off as 16mm bolts rusted solid and noise seems better
The main bar and plug is still fitted , just taped up
I am interested in how your bearing job and the cost turns out as I may have to get mine done , the cars just done about 86k and looking at the fine scratches in the paintwork , seen only when the sun shines , a rare event in the last 6 month , the cars had hard life
Let me know how you get on

If it is the Diff Bearings they rapidly get very noisy, it takes from is that a whine to Censored it is in 500 miles.
Low level Diff Bearing Repair I think is 3.5 hours and depending on the dealer costs between £400 to £600. Parts about £150.

It went in on the Friday and was quickly diagnosed as the diff bearing and I had it back Monday afternoon. It was about £420. Running brilliantly again now.

From what is being said I am not convinced mine is a bearing whine
I have had the noise since I bought it in December , but it was one of many problems that needed looking at and I sort of put this down the priority scale
I have been listening more closely , even with the radio off , and it does get higher pitched at higher speeds
Though not loud it is annoying , when I got the car serviced the mechanic agreed I had a noise but would not suggest a source
Before I commit myself I am going to remove the tow bar completely and work from that
Was your repair done at landrover cos it seems very reasonable

just drove across to stranrarer and observed that with the cruise control on at 60mph the whine form the back remains the same whether going up hill or down , obviously the load on the bearings will be different , i suppose it could be the universal joint on the rear drive shaft , is that a rubber device or has it been upgraded ?
