Diagnostic reader/scanner info?

I have used a couple of the cheaper diagnostic code readers on the LR2. Inc a Maxiscan ms509. Both of which did not pick up on two stored codes, relating to a clogged fuel filter. Both readers were OBD1 & 2, CAN compliant. Does anyone know what protocol the FR2 uses? I know some of the more expensive code readers work on a FR2. Just wondering if any of the cheaper plug & play code readers would work for reading & deleting codes?
Thanks. Landy has now gone.

Hi Boroboy,
I think you have awnsered your own question. To be frank, the cheap code readers will have very little access to the FL2 systems thats why there so cheap. The FL2 uses OBD11 as do all new cars. Depending on how deep you want to go into the systems from just reading and deleating codes to to near dealership access were you can run live data to actuator tests is where its gonna cost you.
What you have to ask yourself, is how much money are you willing to part with? Thumbs Up

Superspark,
I know what your mean. If FR2 was OBDII or CAN, would have thought the Maxiscan would have picked the P0- codes up, but it didn't. At first I thought it was working OK, as said no codes stored, when there were two Laughing Then I tried to use it for live readings & said unable to connect. The penny started to drop. Yet it worked fine on my Astra H, in turn some readers won't work on that either. Must be a bit of a mine field. Would have though FR2's would be running with Ford protocols?
For the amount of times I would use it, for me not worth spending alot on one. Neither do I want to really use one for prog etc. Happy to read & delete codes.
The hunt for a cheapish plug & play reliable code reader continues Laughing
Thanks for your input. Landy has now gone.

I use this: http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_ENG327P.html

Needs a laptop. Haven't actually read any fault codes yet but I am assuming that is because there hasn't been any! Picks up the two modules ok.

Good luck

Greybeard,
Thanks for info.
The Maxiscan picked up two modules, just said no codes stored. When they were two. saying that, it would not read live data either. Have Opcom on a spare Laptop for my Vaux, which works great Thumbs Up Landy has now gone.

Guys EOBD diagnostics is very different & just relates to emission related fault codes only .
( so for example low fuel pressure caused by blocked filter does not flag up as an emission fault )

TBH they are a waste of time unless you really understand about EOBD and freeze frame data & pending data !

Factory level diagnostics tool are deep dive and will read every module.

WARNING ! you do need to be very careful plugging in cheap diagnostic fault code readers into late cars as extensive damage can be caused to dashboards etc. I have seen it done many times when I spent years in the vehicle diagnostic industry.

Oldgeezer,
I've never had a problem using Opcom (touch wood), have even changed prog variants on my vaux. Stored & displayed live readings.
The low fuel pressure codes came up as a P0087 & P0088. So should that not have flagged a code up on any CAN reader? Does the FR2 use CAN protocol?
I was only really wanting a plug & play reader to display & delete codes. Not bothered about going any further.
Thanks for info. Landy has now gone.
