Freelander 2 driveshaft problem

Can anybody tell me the difference between a manual/auto n/s driveshaft on a 6 speed auto 2011 sd4 freelander 2 please. I am trying to track down a shaking problem when put under load up a steep hill or when powering on a right hand lock that has started on my car It has been fine for 20,000 miles.

2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Zermatt Silver

Was interested to read your post.

I had a vibration under load and especially up hills for quite a while, kept asking garage to look at it but nothing found until eventually it became very bad and then they checked drive shaft and half shafts and the bearings on both were very worn, apparently you could physically wobble both within their housings. Both replaced under extended warranty no questions asked.

Since then done alot more miles with no problems whatsoever.

Are you sure it is a drive shaft. I had a similar problem with a BMW a few years back when driving slowly, or letting the clutch out on reasonably steep hills and another vibration problem with my FL2 fairly recently when changing down in some gears. Both turned ot to be DMF related. Thumbs Up

Could be as well as a problem on the Haldex because of the torque windup.
I've seen some talks about that on the Russian forum.
The solution was first to change the Haldex oil and then, if no success, repair or replace.

Mines back in garage today for this problem.

Last week both front wheel bearings and gearbox output seals replaced which reduced vibration judder but did not stop it. Apparently mine has already had a new gearbox fitted at some time prior to my ownership and I bought it with 3,500 miles on clock, so not very feeling very confident at present. Will update with progress.

50 mile round trip to dealer has seen it get worse.

Dealer now booked in 3 days next week, looking at gearbox / torque convertor or both being replaced Big Cry

I have now fitted a brand new n/s driveshaft, bottom wishbone and another complete strut assembly to prove the bits it cannot be. I have roadtested it this morning and it is exactly the same. One thing I have noticed is it is fine in sport mode so I am thinking it is in the gearbox now. I have taken this to a main dealer before and they did not want to know because car had been previosly damaged before I purchased it. Now I have changed all of the parts that may have been part of the repair I feel more confident to challenge them. I have owned it from 8k and this problem started at around 20k. Very frustrating as I really do like the car and there have been no other problems with it.
Hi lespes, is your work being done under Landrover warranty?

All Freelander 2's except the 2 wheel drive versions have a Haldex unit. Generation 3 was fitted to models built between 06 and 10, Generation 4 was fitted to MY11 onwards (September 2010). Unit is located just in front of the rear differential.
Try Google search for Haldex Coupling and there are plenty of images of it fitted to other vehicles.

Turns out my first diagnosis was correct, that I had a driveshaft problem. Problem was I chose the wrong side when I fitted a new n/s shaft Sad I have had the d/s drive shaft changed under warranty and all shaking now gone. It seems that driveshafts are not a big problem with freelanders but they get the odd one or two that play up. Thanks to everybody for there input.

Mine still in workshop Big Cry

Had to go in early than booked as the vibration was getting worse with each mile.

1 week and a day so far.

Garage also said it was getting worse with evrey test they carried out for Landrover.

A new transfer box was tried taken from a demonstrator , no difference.

2 days on Landrover have now authorised new auto gearbox and oil cooler to be fitted. £4000 for gearbox Exclamation

Second gearbox unit fitted before so landrover not making much out of this one.

Only problem now Landrover have no stock at the factory Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

Looks like you have a bigger problem than mine. Hope they find you a gearbox soon. Did they try driveshafts? You would of thought the shake on mine was more than a worn cv joint. Best of luck
