usb memory stick sorting

I use a memory stick to play mp3's from. I have them grouped in different folders. Both folders and files are not sorted alphabetically but completely random. Any ideas why and how to have it sorted? Its quite hard to find the desired folder and if found the files within are not played in correct order.

My2013 "small" Meridian system with satnav/7" screen.

First time I copied the files directly from my NAS with its backup feature (qnap). Then I deleted all and copied again with a windoze computer. Now the directories are sorted alphabetically, but not the files inside. I hope it does not take an Apple to have it all sorted correctly. Rolling Eyes

I keep on talking to myself here Shocked

I found a hint here. The point is, that Fat32 does not provide alphabetical sorting but only in the order the files were added. This software here should help, I'll give it a try.

That's probably the point.

The software is the solution by the way. After using that all is sorted as expected. The next problem is now that some of the files are not played after an error message "file not found".

I will let myself know here when I found the reason. Razz

I've got a MY13 but it's a lower spec 5" LCD one. All seemed fine with mp3s on a USB memory stick. I'll check a little later. New: Freelander2 GS 62 plate (MY13) - Santorini Black with Clearview & Front PDC

On mine the artists are alphabetically sorted, as are the albums under them. Then the individual tracks are in track order New: Freelander2 GS 62 plate (MY13) - Santorini Black with Clearview & Front PDC

My2013 has a USB but the dealer confirmed only for power or iPod and not music from a stick as we tested a couple in the showroom with the land rover test stick!

I have the small screen setup but with Bluetooth phone.

Was a bit disappointed but hey well.

I have the 7" screen, and can confirm that the top level folders (artists) are in alphabetical order, then the next level underneath (album), with tracks then in track no order - copied the folder structure directly from the itunes music folder on my qnap NAS.

The only confusion I have is that the manual recommends the use of lossless formats, but it seems that both apple and windows media lossless are not supported. Anybody else tried these or am I stuck with 256k aac? Fuji White MY13 SD4 Dynamic

United States 2013 LR2 2.0T HSE Lux Auto Barolo Black

I tried WMA 9.2 lossless and WMA 10 Pro (lossy) in my MY13 HSE LUX (big Meridian) and it failed with both file types. I'm going to do a bit more trial and error with file formats before I give up. It's not mentioned but I think I'll also try FLAC and MP4.

OK So here's what works and what doesn't:

WMA 9.2 VBR Smile
MP3 VBR (LAME -V 0) Smile
AAC Avg. Bitrate Smile
AAC Const. Bitrate Smile

AAC VBR Sad
Apple Lossless Sad
WMA 9.2 Lossless Sad
WMA 9.2 Lossless + Copy Protection Sad
WMA Pro 10 Lossy Sad
WAV Censored

FLAC, APE, OGG, and WAV all unrecognized. Unsurprising, but it was worth a go.

You can *however*, play FLAC/ALAC files from your phone via Bluetooth. Whether or not it's downsampling them (likely yes) or not depends on LR/Meridian's implementation of the Bluetooth stack in the system.

That's all I've got for now. 2013 LR2 HSE LUX: 2.0L I4; Barolo Black, Ebony Windsor Leather; Navigation, Satellite Radio, Cold Weather Pack, Piano Black Trim.

Kuaka - you're a star, you've just saved me about an hour of messing about with different file types.

Its especially annoying that there is a bug in the audio system that get it stuck in a loop if there are only unsupported files on the USB stick. So I can only try one at a time!

Looks like I'll have to get batch conversion working in dbpoweramp and convert all my apple lossless library into 320kbps aac, which seems to be about the best supported quality that you can put on a USB stick.

I might pop an email over to LR and ask which lossless file types they had in mind! Fuji White MY13 SD4 Dynamic

The only thing I can add is make sure you don't use the VBR AAC codec. It didn't play for me, although I didn't use iTunes to encode. ABR and CBR AAC played perfectly. Hopefully LR can get a software update that allows lossless playback. 2013 LR2 HSE LUX: 2.0L I4; Barolo Black, Ebony Windsor Leather; Navigation, Satellite Radio, Cold Weather Pack, Piano Black Trim.

Just to add to this thread...

I have an MY13 XS will the small Meridian system. Page 86 of the Owners manual seems to suggest that the unit will play WAV files.

I have my music on a USB Memory stick plugged into the armrest socket. Now it will happily play Mp3 files from that source, but when I try WAV files it comes up with a "No playable audio files" message.

So should it play WAVs or not? From this thread it would seem not, so is the manual fibbing?

Cheers Dave

Ta I thought as much,

VW owners manuals are just the same, full of features that only appear as an option or in certain markets. LOL
