Is it possible to get a nearside handle with the manual release fitted and fit that to the drivers side as well?

I would guess all LR's have manual lock on same side to save money |

So youre now standing there with the headlights on waiting for the battery to go totally flat? Its not a very good system if the alarm doesnt work in sleep mode is it?? Isnt the alarm system supposed to have its own back up battery too though? Yours sounds like a heAVY SLEEPER |

How about making a hole in the wall big enough to get your hand/key through to use manual lock - you could then fit a metal plate like a soot box on chimneys in case you ever need to use it again |
