I have no knowledge of this, but it must be worth at least checking the ATF level and probably replacing with new

Good point. I've recently topped up and checked the level without improvement (added 0.5L and collected about the same). The fluid was renewed at 185,000km however this was done at a workshop - always a chance they used the incorrect type.

I've now ordered some ATF 3309 and will try to find time to complete a renew this weekend.

I renewed the ATF on the weekend using the dump and fill method detailed on this site (thanks for the detailed write up dunkley201!). I did this twice for a total of 6 quarts. The fluid was reddish brown - now red.

Unfortunately no improvement in the idle vibration. I was hopeful at first, but the vibration returned as usual - progressively as the components warmed up in the stop start Sydney traffic.

When I got home, I ran the engine in gear with the bonnet open. The engine doesn’t visually appear to be vibrating badly, vibrations too frequent to see.

Happy to have ruled out another potential source - must be getting closer. Any other ideas are very welcome / appreciated. FL2 - MY08 TD4 SE Auto

I think so. It was replaced 10mths ago. Still looks in good condition.
