EGR problem causing engine warning light

Since the start of this week I've been getting an engine warning light showing. I have used my cheap-o
ebay ELM327 clone OBD scanner to find out that it's being caused by P042E and P042F faults.
From limited information on the web I believe these to be both indicating the EGR valve. I'm guessing that
the valve may be clogged with soot and possibly unable to move - hence the error. Clearing the faults last for
a day or so before they reappear.

I realise the valve is between the engine and the bulkhead, has anyone here had any experience of removing
it for inspection and can it be done reasonably straight-forward ?

Has anyone got any comments good or bad on removing the valve permanently using one of the available kits ?

I am not sure that EGR blanking kits are available for the FL2 - only the FL1 in my experience and was a common problem. Eliminating the EGR valve usually resulted in more performance and mpg - pity we cant do the same for the FL2 Sad Cheers,

It is a pig of a job to replace, unfortunately.

As for blanking it off, there are no kits available as yet. Strathearn Engineering

Looks like your gonna have to take it off and clean it. soot build up causes the moving parts to stick which will give incorrect readings hence fault codes.
Ive just removed one on a 2007 vectra which was clogged right up and the valve was stuck, after cleaning it up and replaced has been fine.
Shame FL2 is so much harder to remove and replace.

after reading these posts I was wondering if there is anything we could/should be doing to prevent problems with the EGR ?

additives/fuel/driving style, etc ??

If you don't fancy stripping it down you could try some 10K spray. Some people swear by it for cleaning out crap from the induction tract. John

The EGR stays closed at full throttle. Just hope it sticks there... Whistle Laughing Strathearn Engineering

on an american forum they blame modern diesel fuel as the cetain level(that is how good the fuel burns is low) as i read it its like compairing the octaine level in petrol the higher it is the better it burns i think the same goes for the cetain level in diesel fuel the higher the better what would be interesting if any members out there are having egr problems what type of fuel are they using.low cetain levels can cause a stickey / tar deposits to build up in the valve but the question you need to ask is why are some l/rover engines affected and some not Question

1 are the people having egr problems using supermarket fuel and do they only do local runs or a lot of m/way runs ?

2 how many use yhe premium fuel /performance/fuel and are they having egr problems as well.?

does sombody want to do a poll to find out rainy-city

EGR - Oil in EGR pipe

I use premium fuel, and do mainly Motor way driving..

Also, I had a look at the EGR, and got as far as removing the air hose and EGR connecting pipe.
There was a small amount of oil in there ( 1 tea spoon max), no sign of soot or tar

Still not sure how to remove the EGR Sad , will have a look at the WE when have more time

I believe this is normal
