Off-road spare parts checklist for the FL2

Does anyone carry spare parts with them when they off-road? In a couple months I'll be venturing out into the Mojave desert and I want to be prepared in to fix anything that might commonly fail on a FL2.

I've only had my FL2 for a year and so far it's been very reliable so I'm not sure which parts I should definitely carry. At this point I'll probably just bring the basic stuff: fan belts, hoses, clamps, etc. Installed a hitch, stock roof rack, mantec skid plates, General Grabbers AT2 255/60/R18, and a rear access ladder. Also made a hitch-mount for the winch. Looking to install a front hitch, rooft-top basket, and lift kit.

When I head outback, the most common failure is a tyre. I carry a spare off the rim with tyre plyers to allow me to change it. So in total I have 6 tyres and 5 rims. Our deserts can have a lot of sharp rocks. Lower tyre pressures (around 24psi) are better as the rubber can flex around the rock without getting punctured. Sounds like fun Very Happy

Depends on how remote you are going.
I agree that only one spare tyre is no enough, personally I would go for a complete second spare and a spare inner tube.
Never venture far without a diagnostics tool, at the very minimum a basic OBD2 reader.
Would also advise spare fuel and a fuel bleed pump - give the fuel tank a good knock and the fuel gauge will read wrong, this can either tell you it's empty and cut the engine, or tell you it's half full and you run out. Topping up will cure the first problem, but without some means of bleeding the system topping up will not get you going in the second instance. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

The most important thing is that people know when you are due back, just in case Wink I would normally say that they know your route but thats probably not practical in a desert Laughing Think people have covered the spares for the freeby, tyres, fuel and clamps etc but also plenty of fluids (water) for you and the freeby but you have probably done this before so you will know all that, Oh! almost forgot, THE most important thing is to enjoy yourself Very Happy have fun and I'm not a bit jealsous Evil or Very Mad

Epoxy filler to plug holes on any tank that might get a hole in it.......and a paper clip, box of matches and complete seasons of McGyver on dvd so you know what to do with them. Smile

@Andy - funny you mention that. I actually banged up the gas tank pretty badly. Now I believe I need a new fuel tank sender unit but I'm not 100% sure. The gas tank occasionally does wonky things (like read that it's half full when it's completely empty). Installed a hitch, stock roof rack, mantec skid plates, General Grabbers AT2 255/60/R18, and a rear access ladder. Banging up your fuel tank isnt a good idea
Wiped mine out 8 weeks ago and still awaiting parts from the UK
Wont be happening again to easily as i am fitting under body protection (front and rear), bigger wheels and a suspension lift.
All three are good idea if your going anywhere seriously remote or rugged

Occasionally reading half full when empty is the fault mine has - dealer has said it's a new sender time Sad
Bigger wheels might help with the reduced ground clearance, as the front and rear protection (skid plates?) do rob you of around 25mm.
When I fitted larger wheels on the FL1 auto it upset the gearing, but I feel the FL2 has enough power to cope with the altered gearing.
Not so sure about the suspension lift, Goodyear MTs and enough speed to keep you going are my favoured way, the skid plates help by reducing snagging.

Couldn't agree more about the sense of humour, remember why you are doing this, it's for fun.

Yah, just installed the mantec front & rear skid plates. I'll post photos when I get a chance. I had to cut a decent amount of material out of the rear skid plate to make it fit (and prevent the exhaust from hitting it when I go over bumps). That may be because I'm fitting it on an american car (probably has a slightly different exhaust system).

@cli - Martas on this forum is the only person I know that's lifted a FL2. He used spacers and will send you his autocad design if you ask nicely. Installed a hitch, stock roof rack, mantec skid plates, General Grabbers AT2 255/60/R18, and a rear access ladder. Also made a hitch-mount for the winch. Looking to install a front hitch, rooft-top basket, and lift kit.
