Should my Gear leaver be 'spring' loaded

Lent my car to son ( yes I know ) just got back and use of gear leaver seems 'different'
I feel certain that previously when coming out of 6 or 5th gear the leaver ' moved' itself to line up with 3/4th gear positions, mine doesn't I have to push leaver over

Have I lost the 'spring' ?
Don't want to go to dealer till I check what should happen
Many thanks 2011 XS,Sumatra Black, GONE MARCH 2014- RR Evoque Prestige 5 door ,MY 2014,Loire Blue, Silver Roof, Panoramic roof.

When the lever is in neutral at rest, push forward or back should select Third or Fourth respectively, it only needs pushing to the left to find First and Second and to the right for Fith and Sixth. Seems you do have a fault Sad

mine springs to between 3rd and 4th too... sorry sounds like something has come off - you could try lifting the cover around the gear stick and see if there is anything obvious to be seen. 2002 Honda VFR800

stick your fingers under the rear of the chrome gear surround, under the leather gaiter and pull up chrome trim and gaiter will lift. there you will find a white duvet style piece fold this open
now you can see the gear stick mechanism, there should be some spring loaded wire thingies with clear tubing on them,
how to mend it? havnt a clue Rolling Eyes

to clarify your pulling up , removing the silver spike shown in this photo from its black connector. be brave it wont break(easily)

was trying to cure the squeak, turned out to be the front of the cables in the end, the clear tubes were badly worn so I turned them round At work

mine is spring loaded with the bias to 3rd/4th position as previous post.

good for dropping down from 6th to 4th with a flick of the wrist.

does sound as if your son has managed to dislodge something, did he take it off road ?
