I think Bio is made from rapeseed oil or waste cooking oil, gives your car the cod and chips frying aroma.
Chicken poo will be methane gas I should think.

Think I read somewhere that it screws the high pressure fuel system but I think it is because it is hydroscopic and so can get water in it which won't do the injectors or your fuel pump Amy good.

Not sure on the earlier ones but MY11 models are compatible with up to 10% bio-diesel.

Most big commercial Bio-Diesels plants blend their diesel away into traditionaly produced fuels at a low percentage so that the big fuel companies have "green credentials".

If anyone fancies having a crack at home having robbed the oil from the back of the local curry house, you'll be needing a methoxy blend for the esterification, so your Mrs is going to be dead happy with you blending a couple of hundred litres of Methanol and 50% Caustic Potash in the garage ............. you will also be producing glycerine as a by-product so you can flog that to your local cake factory...... probably 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

Hmmm, quite a lot of misinformation in this thread. S'pose I'd best say hello first though. Joined up 'cos SWMBO is looking at a FL2, got the FFRR myself.

Anyway, BioDiesel is not compatible with most of the pre 2008 diesel engines globally. The reason is that it attacks the rubber compound in the seals used on injectors etc. THis is much more of an issue with the modern high pressure "Common Rail" engines. Older stuff isn't so fussy with things like the 200TDi capable of running on just about anything.

The bit about it being hygroscopic is a myth. The water damages comes from recycled used oil (old chip fat etc) which has not been dried thoroughly enough. Biodiesel itself won't absorb from the atmosphere in the same way as brake fluid does.

However, at ratios up to 5% it is considered to be safe on most engines but if you do use it then it can loosen up petroleum based grot from the tank & lines so for the first few fills it plays hell with the fuel filter. Note that Morrisons already have 5% as their standard stuff at quite a lot of their forecourts. Doesn't seem to be causing too many issues.

The Jury is out on the 10% blend but it will become the de-facto standard fairly soon, some are even predicting a 15% blend. This means a lot of us will find out, me included on the FFRR TDV8. If it causes seal failure as some predict then I wouldn't want to be a motorcyclist; there'll be a lot of diesel on the roads.
