Is your insurance company local to you as you could arrange to collect the certificate from there offices, if not see how much a courier would be

Even if a dealer does self-tax (most do) they are still legally required to see an original cover note (though some are more flexible than others).

Norwich Union do something called "drive away" insurance, but I think the dealer has to be signed up to it in advance, I used this when I purchased my D3 a few years ago.

Basically, you arrange it whilst at the dealers, you get FREE insurance for a few days, starting immediately, and then you get a no-obligation quote from them for if you wish the policy to continue. It's not even one of those "unless you tell us in writing, we'll automatically empty your bank account" sly deals. In fact, you don't even pay any money up front or provide any bank/direct debit details, it really is a freebie. They then provide a reference code direct to the dealer that proves that the vehicle is insured which is a legally acceptable alternative to a cover note.

Not much help if your dealer doesn't offer this, but at least if you demand to know why they don't offer this service when other LR dealers do, they might give more thought to "bending the rules" and accepting a faxed cover note.

why don't you get the insurance company to post the cover note straight to the dealer - mine did (NFU Mutual).

I stupid that they can not accept a faxed copy of cover notes as a legal document to tax a car.

You can use fax documents in a court of law to prove various things, solicitors use these everyday to send legal and binding documents.

But Mrs "I'm better than you cause my job needs a counter and bullet proof glass" Post Office JobsWorth can not accept a faxed certificate to tax a car. Evil or Very Mad

I guess the thinking is along the lines that it's easy to forge a fax, but that's irrespective of the fact that with a PC and colour printer most of us could knock up a convincing Certificate of Motor Insurance pretty easily.

if the police can drive around and have a computer system that shows whether a car is taxed and MOT'd and insured.

Then why not have a system where you can go into you local post office, and they have access to the same system

take along your V5 Logbook (with 4 seats or 5 Wink ) pay your £999 and then walk out with your circular piece of paper.
