I think that all AT tyres in 245/70 R17 will be ok without rubbing used on standard wheels and standard suspension Thumbs Up.

So I took the car out this weekend and tackled some pretty hardcore rutty sand tracks with a few rock crawling parts.

I am very impressed with the performance of the tires, and the additional ground clearance is really noticeable off road.

There was no rubbing whatsoever even at full articulation and turns, so very pleased with the car's performance Thumbs Up

Spacers are getting made, will have 25mm at the front and 30mm on the back, thanks to some help from Martas.

Thank you! I was actually looking after the entire length from ground to the wheel arch, which I saw was 87.5cm for Martas at the front tire, after suspension lift and 245/70/R17 tires and 84cm for iain cooper's stock car. In your case, as the tire diameter is around 77.5, the total would be around 88cm - but some is lost due to the tire deformation on the base.

Anyway, it proved my theory that the increase in ground clearance is quite significant. Thanks a lot, Strah!

Ground clearance also depends on the tyre pressure and how spacers are settled down. Average lift from spacers + 245/70 R17 tyres would be around 2" / 5cm.

Finally the spacers are finished, all I have to do now is mount them.

Does anyone know if any nuts and bolts need to be replaced when taking apart the suspension or can I just reuse the same ones? I have longer bolts for the struts and spacers but do I need to replace any others?

I will post an update if I get them fitted this weekend Thumbs Up

Hi Strah, how did you go with the installing the spacers?

I have owned my FL2 for just over 1 week now, trying to get more clearance where posible, getting General Grabbers At2 245/70R17 fitted tomorrow (hoping the spare fits in well *fingers crossed*), and very keen to get some spacers done too. Where did you get them made? cost? do you feel any difference in the ride?

On a different topic, is it possible to get a front hidden mount winch bracket for the FL2 like they have for the Disco3?

Hi Tissa,

I'm very happy with the spacers off road the car doesn't bottom out any more, although I can feel a difference in handling on road (slightly more body roll in corners and sometimes feels jittery).

My advice would be put on the bigger tyres and see how you go with them first, if you go off road often then consider the spacers but be prepared to encounter some obstacles when fitting the front ones Laughing

Hi Strah,

Thanks for the reply, im actually very happy with the General Grabbers AT2, went with the 245/70/17R, no issues at all with rubbing etc, little louder on the road but that’s expected with an aggressive AT tyre. Looks much tougher now and the added clearance of almost 3/4” is much appreciated. Thumbs Up

Haven’t had the chance to go into the bush as yet, but im sure il be more than impressed. As for spacers I might let that idea go for now, as you mentioned not sure if the extra body roll etc is worth it since I have only been off road a few times so far.

I was lucky enough to get a 9000lbs winch from Aldi few weeks back; hunted around and brought a hitch mount winch bracket and hitch recovery, was all excited to fit it, only to discover that the factory hitch receiver is only 40mm and not the standard 50mm. VERY SHATTERED! So ended up returned all the gear. Why did LR decided to use a 40mm hitch is besides me Evil or Very Mad

So now on the mission to install rear view camera, screen (still tossing up between rear view mirror type or one to sit above the radio in the space provided), also some spot lights on a number plate mount.

So unfortunately for now will have let go of the off road gear/lift kit idea, as it is proving much harder than expect to get parts for the Freelander 2.

If you don't end up fitting any spacers on the car you should invest in a Mantec guard for the fuel tank as I have damaged mine extensively. You will bottom out less with the bigger tires but it would still be a good idea to fit the guard.

I think it's hard to find after-market gear for the freelander 2 because it's not taken seriously by the off road community especially here in Australia as a "real 4wd". If it had low range and a solid rear axle there would be snorkels, bull bars, winches........ Laughing I think it's a real shame because it's such a great vehicle on and off the road.

Hi there, when I fitted 235x85x16" tyres to my Disco 1 I found the speedo matched my GPS much more accurately than when it was still on the standard tyres , but hey! it is 20 years old and modern speedos are much more accurate.
