60K service cost at Harwoods Tonbridge

Just had the 60K service at my local dealer, Harwoods, Tonbridge, Kent.

The rear pads required changing and the MOT was also due. Total cost a whopping £885.65!!!

The break down was:

Service and MOT £612.54
Rear brake pads change £132.00
VAT (on 705.54) £141.11
TOTAL: £885.65

This seems very expensive - have I been over charged? Other than the cost, service was excellent and they picked-up and delivered the car from home.

Having looked at previous posts it seems that this is over the odds - a quick straw poll would give me some ammunition to challenge the dealer.

Cheers,

Henry

MOT was £39.00 plus VAT...

I'm going to call the dealer tomorrow - what's the recommended Land Rover cost for the 4th service?

LR don't stipulate costs, that's down to the dealer, and what they charge per hour

Normally people check prices prior to actually having the work carried out, I'm not sure what you could actualy do after the fact Confused Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

As pinky said, not sure how much come back you will have now, but you could always try and get a discount for next time? Thumbs Up Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

The dealer service (which is a 'B') is standard other than yours being a 2008 should have had the brake fluid changed, did they do this and the cost was reflected in the service charge?
It seems to be about £150 over the odds for even the dearest dealer.

Lancaster Reading quoted me £500 for the 60k service. Any "extras", such as brake pads, would have been additional, of course.

A specialist would bring that price down to about £340 but with the warranty now a distant memory I decided that at those prices I could do the job myself. I generally service our own cars and used to service our previous Discoveries. Having now done the job, I really cannot see how dealers can justify their prices. Also, by doing the job myself I could note that the brake pads are getting down and might not last another 15k miles. They should be good for another 5k to 7k, however, so while I can delay changing them until they've worn a bit more, a dealer would probably be obliged to renew them now.

Spoke to the dealer having got a few quotes from other local dealers. The service manager conceded that the service cost at Harwoods was much higher than others, and attributed it to differing labour costs. He claimed that they charge 'standard LR recommended rates'. As a good will gesture he has promised a £100 discount on the next service. I won't be going back though, and will probably use an independent specialist next time.

I hadn't really appreciated the differences between different franchised dealers, assuming that there may be a few pounds difference, but not this much.

I've certainly learnt the hard way to shop around for servicing costs in the future.... beware being ripped off!!

Shopping around in Bristol saved me over £170 on my 4 year service and MOT. The 2 dealers, one LR approved (£412) and the other a LR main dealer (£240) are less than half a mile apart.
