Yes, it is possible that it would still fire,run roughly and cut out, if you incorrectly fitted the belt.

I have a Thule 3 bike carrier, it tilts to allow access to boot area.
Easy to fit and remove, can be locked onto tow ball.

I have owned quite a few mercs and the forums are excellent.
They are similar cost as any other car to service if you take to a main dealer.
