I was just curious about the facts and figures on the VW Tiguan having seen one in a car park today.

If we believe the Parkers fact sheet for the top spec 170bhp 2.0TDI then we have a slight problem.

According to them, the aforementioned model has (of course) a smaller and less powerful engine than the FL2 SD4, a manual gearbox and the car itself is lighter. Despite all this, they expect us to believe it can tow 2200kg braked compared to the SD4 which can tow 2000kg braked.

To be honest I think the TD4 could tow more than the Tiguan let alone the SD4!

I've just checked on the VW website and according to that, the payload in 100kg! I think they've got nose weight and trailer weight muddled up.

Mind you, if ever I want to buy a caravan, or a VW for that matter, I know that I'm ready to be put out to grass!

They both can tow alright much more than that, but it's about the ensemble's total weight. (car+caravan)
From what I've know there is a limit (at least in Romania) for the total weight of the ensemble. Otherwise you need a different driving license category.
So, in conclussion, the Tiguan, being 200 kg lighter, can tow 200 kg more.

Towing a 1800kg caravan with a 1580kg car sounds like a recipe for disaster. I think VW are trying a cute marketing trick with claiming 2500kg.
It may be able to pull it, however get a bit of a wobble on and surely the heavier element will win.
