Laptop for DSLR

Anyone suggest a laptop for my Nkon D90?
I use mostly RAW files so a decent HDD is a must.
I'd also prefer a 17.3 screen.
I'm also not much for touchscreen, used them for CAD in the past but ditched in favour of the good old mouse.

I have a 17" and it's to big to actually consider it being a "laptop". Not sure but if that's the root you're going on you should also look at alternatives like these carier case type desktop which fold together. They are quite powerfull. If it's actually a laptop that is handy and movable don't go over 15".

If you're gonna use it outdoors a lot, stay away from glossy screens, they are crap for that purpose!

Hi Pegleg,
I use Dell xps laptops, never had any problem, 64 bit Win7 and 64 bit Photoshop. CS5, it's fast and 15" is fine. Mine has a glossy screen, personal choice, images are more clear, but it can be a pain with reflections.

As for the hard drive, Do Not rely on a large built in drive, it will make you store your raw files on there and sods law, it will fail.
I have separate 1TB NAS drives for my pics which back up automatically from the laptop, being portable the hard disks are stressed, with heat and movement.

I use Canon gear which obviously produces better raw files which also helps Laughing

Didn't take long to fall into a Nikon/Canon battle (which is a non-starter because Nikons take photos and Canons go BANG!)

My wife and I are both using HP Pavilions with Nikon D700 RAW files with no problem at all with any application(s) you care to throw at it. The glossy screen is either a boon or a pain - depends upon your point of view (in more ways than one).

Prior to the HPs we were using VAIO but I have to say they are overpriced for what they've become... not a patch on older models or in keeping with other SONY products. Capable machines but not robust enough for the price you're paying. Freelander 1 TD4 HSE - gone, 2 weeks after the Cat.Converter!

I'm not going to get into the Nikon/Cannon debate. Heard it all before!!

Been thinking if it's better to go to a desktop, i don't need the portability and they are easy to upgrade. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

I used a Toshiba P100 for about 4 years, 17" screen and the image was reasonable with some reflective issues at times.
Switched to a Vaio last year, the laptop is brilliant as such except for the screen, damned nigh invisible if outdoors which is an absolute pain.
Hoping to get a Dell ATG next year instead. I use a home built i7 for editing at home although I am trying to get to grips with Adobe CS on the iMac but far too many bits to tweak the image so probably overkill. Prog rock is cool! Smile
