Germany 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Stornoway Grey

Hi Scotster,
from experience and the recommendation of Mercedes-Benz, which for me are the most trusted and knowledgeable engine-designer and maufacturer. Mercedes-Benz in its list of approved motor oils have listed the Mobil 1 Supersyn 0W40 as suitable for all their engines, be it petrol or diesel. The Mobil 1 0W40 Turbo Diesel is not even listed...!

Regards
YF

petrol v diesel

YF,

I'm loathe to ask yet another question ... but I'm afraid I'm still a bit confused about oils. Confused

Your comprehensive list above does not seem to distinguish between those suitable for diesel engines only versus those for petrol. Are you suggesting we can use any on the A3/B3 oils listed in a TD4 with no DPF?

Thanks.
Life is not a dress rehearsal!

Offer

I have got a service offer for 25.000km service from my dealer, and I can see he will use 6,50 litre
Castrol Performance A1 oil for my car TD4 man. without DPF.
YF wrote 31/12 in this thread that 5,80 litre was needed with oil filter change.
Are I going to be conned with too much secondary oil? A1 oil = rubbish ????

I just had my oil change and filter change done at 2500Km with Mobil 1 Supersyn 0W40 as recommended.

My garage said they needed 6L.

Not sure why yours need 6.5.... ?????????

I run a TD4 with no DPF. '57 GS TD4 in Stornoway. Privacy, Leather, Tred Cills. From ebay etc.. 18" 12 spoke HSE alloys, rear spoiler, clear side repeaters with clear leds, led interior light to replace bulbs, sports exhaust trim, TomTom 720.

To all
You need exactly 5,8 litre of motor oil with oil filter change. 6 or 6,5 litres will simply overfill and any overfill of motor oil is harmful as this will lead to formation of oil-foam which in turn prevents the oil to reach all parts of the engine. Are you sure that they mean litre and not pints???

Yes, as I explained in earlier contributions, the Ford recommended motor oil as per A1 specification is in my opinion NOT good enouth (spelling ok?) for our high-tech diesel engine. Any motor oil which will meet A3/A4 or B3/B4 or higher will be suitable. The TD4 without DPF is happy to receive the same motor oil as used for petrol engines, as long as the above ACEA-norm is met.

Has anyone used halfords own brand fully synthetic 5/30 . States it is suitable for Ford & Volvo. ACEA A5 B5.
Would this be suitable for a FL2 without DPF.
If so it is £28.99 for 5lt buy one get one half price.

exhumation of this ancient thread: f.i. of the DPF equipped, please take a look to motor oil that matches RN0720 ( ACEA C4) specifications and compare the datasheets with the LR recommended Ford 934-b spec.

As you can see, RN0720 seems to be better than Ford spec: HTHS higher, better performances in Evaporation loss, higher TBN.

I have been using Comma Xtech 5w 30 for the past 4 years as I found my Freelander burned quite a bit of oil. Since using comma xtech my Freelander seams to only require the occasional top up every 2500 miles.

Comma Xtech specification :FORD WSS-M2C913-D, WSS-M2C913-C, WSS-M2C913-B, WSS-M2C913-A ACEA A5/B5; API SL CF

Halfords own brand oil is comma engine oil sold in Halfords branding at a much higher price.

Later freelancers need Comma ecolife 5w 30 FORD WSS-M2C934-B ACEA C1
Fully synthetic, high performance 5W-30 low SAPS oil for modern petrol and diesel vehicles including those fitted with exhaust after-treatment units that require an ACEA C1 grade.

My freelander is a 2007 xs td4 10150 miles done 50k on comma xtech with out any problems.
The wife wants me to purchase a vw transporter kombi as she recons its better to carry the kids in and other things such as her horse riding gear etc.
I am going to also hold onto the freelander as long as possible.

I have a 2009 TD4 XS commercial, bought it a year ago for work and pleasure.
It has done nearly 111000 miles, still runs well.
Funnily enough I was thinking about trading it in for a Transporter a few months back, as it would be more practical, but I just couldn't part with the Freely.
I have been using Castrol Magnatec for the past year, a lot of Landrover owners appear to go for it.

+1 for Magnatec. Thumbs Up I notice it has changed from A1 to A5 on my recent purchase.
