Yes!!!
Turn of the main road at Holmbridge, just past the cricket club.
Follow the road then track all the way round Brownhill and then Ramsden res
and you come out half way up the hill to Holmmoss.

Don't foget to check your brakes as soon as you come out onto the main road,
a lot of puddles near the end.
Follow the road back down to Holmbridge, turn right and go around again...

It's not that good, it only gets interesting near the end, but worth a go.

Have fun. Thumbs Up

Cheers Twodogs, going myself with kids, are the roads safe to do so, just on normal road M+S tyers although all 4 nearly new. Any points i should watch out for, heard there is a big 'step' along ramsden lane ?

Any deep water that i should avoid.....

The route is fine, very easy upto the last 1/2 mile.

Then just take it easy, no deep water.

The last time I went round was this time last year when shooting
and we went in a Ford Transit Connect van !!!!!

You should get round it in 10 mins or so.

The one around Castle hill is not as good as the one at Holmbridge.

The first one (part of Ramsden Road) is one of my my local green lanes. There is a big stone step on another part of the Ramsden Road (no longer legal to drive) which I have managed to hit the towbar of my Defender on a few times, but I used to drive this part in my Freelander 1. I must have driven it fifty times over the years.

Personally I think the route is better driven from the Holmbridge end, starts metalled then gradually gets more challenging. You can be into mud straight away from Holme Moss end when it's wet. Won't be much fun tomorrow 'cos a its not been wet, and whatever mud there is will be frozen solid.

Respect the gates!

Google map link here: http://tinyurl.com/4bpva4r

Streetview works for first part - follow Brownhill Road, as far as the 'Road Closed' (gone now)

http://tinyurl.com/streetview-Holmbridge

A6024 from Holmfirth, towards Holme. In Holmbridge, turn off left past church (opp cricket ground), then right, keep right and keep going down Brownhills lane. Its easy for the first half -my kids have driven it in a Ford Ka and a Vauxhall Corsa as far as Yateholme.

Dont go this way in a Freelander! http://tinyurl.com/Ramsden-Road-towards-BIG-STEP Trevor

That would be UP Ramden Road! Rolling with laughter

What time are you coming - I'll come with my camera! I have never achieved UP the step even in my best 210BHP Defender

Bow down Bow down

I don't think that first bit of Ramsden Road is legal to drive now, though. AFAIK it's a bridleway?

Try Brownhill Road - Kiln Bent Road - Holme Woods Lane - Rake Hill Road.

Then you could go round: back down into Holmbridge , up Dobb Top Road, Hollin Brigg Lane, Acre Lane, Hill House lane, Stoney Gate, Gill Lane, untill you meet Cartworth Moor Road (all metalled road to here).

Turn Left into Cartworth Moor Road and follow to Ramsden Road.

and try coming DOWN Ramsden Road from the Whitegate Road X roads... Ramsden Road goes left then sharp right by a gate. Leave your Freelander there and walk downhill where you will shortly come to the BIG STEP Whistle

(Very difficult to turn round once you have committed to the downhill, even in a Defender)

Walk back to your Freelander, turn round and go back to the Whitegate Road X roads.

s7gpt, that's the route that I have driven many times.

I was just showing the wife the Youtube vid when she
reminded me of the time she drove round in a Fiat Uno
and a 16st St.Bernard on the back seat.

Now that was a lot of fun... Whistle

I think Big Step is about 6 minutes in. You can see a row of stone across the road. Looks like the mud/gravel is smoothing it off at that time, but it gets washed away. It looks nothing on the video, and if it is like that you will be fine. But it is maybe a 15 inch stone step when exposed.

I'd forgotten the 1.20 ruts section which was nothing in a Defender, you could easily get cross axled in a Freelander 2. My latest OS 25k map shows it as a bridleway after the right turn down to Brownhill lane though.

Whatever, I would try downhill for your first attempt. Trevor
