Quote from a poster/member on another forum I frequent;

Quote

The question of fitting winter tyres is being discussed on a Jaguar XF forum on which I am a member. I was very surprised to read that on contacting their insurers for a reduction in premium some enquirers were quoted an ADDITIONAL PREMIUM of up to £230. LV charged one chap an extra £37 but when he complained to the MD this was refunded and they agreed that the car would be safer on winter tyres.

Unquote

Sounds like its an excuse to get us punters to pay additional premiums if we are daft enough, safety not seemingly the prime concern Banging Head

This is exactly what we have come to expect in this country, the greedy Censored must surely see the benefit in winter tyres but use it as an excuse to con even more money from the policyholders, I would have no hesitation in finding another insurer and cancelling my policy, that's if I could find some tyres in the first place. Gone, 2007 TD4 SE Auto Baltic blue, clear side repeaters, full sized alloy spare.

English by birth..... Yorkshire by the grace of God.

So long as you're putting on the correct size winter tyre I can't see a problem. Car manufactures just specify size, load and speed rating, not tyre brand and model.

May be a problem if you keep your winter tyres on until summer though.

EV do you ever have anything positive to say on any subject rather than dishing out abused fallacious palliatives?

During a 'phone call from my sister in Spain this morning she said they are coming over to UK in January to buy a new car as the price for a like for like model was 34% cheaper in UK than Spain.

Last week Germany imposed a new law stating that anyone driving a car without winter tyres on will be fined €40, and if they are in an accident in wintery weather without winter tyres the fine will be €80.

England

I beleive there is a little known (& un-enforced) law/bi law about the provision of adequate tyres during icy/snowy conditions in the UK.

Maybe someone could shed some light on this??

And surely a decent winter tyre will have a lesser impact on the cars performance than fitting some economy Far East "teflon" special. And insurance companies don`t complain about that. Don`t drive faster than your angel can fly!

Got this from our insurance people this morning of the missus FL2

Hi Matt,

It doesn't make a difference to MORE TH>N customers (we don't class it as a modification and there is no need to inform us, if you do get them fitted) - i am not sure which company has put out that it does.

many thanks,

Just spoke to one of my customers who owns his own tyre & wheel business & asked him about the insurance info on Winter tyres. He had spoken to his insurance company this morning who dismissed it as nonsence! (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.

Having said all this I just rang Tesco for my Alpina and as I need to put smaller BMW wheels on it (can't get winter tyres in Alpina sizes) they want £54 plus an admin fee as they class it as a modification even though they are smaller, less desirable wheels and genuine OEM BMW wheels for a 3 series, go figure !
