Scotland 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Rimini Red
2011 TD4 S vs TD4 GS

I hope I am not going mad!

I was looking at the 2011 freelander 2 on the land rover website in the build and price section, while looking at the spec of the GS and S i noticed the S now has terrain response unlike previous models of the S. I have priced both the GS and S on a spec which I would like and found the S comes in cheaper even when upgraded to all the same parts as the GS! Now I know I have not added the rear parking sensors and the Audio upgrade as I have my own headunit which I would use in the new car but the price difference is £2,000.00. Have a look below and see if I have missed anything.

Freelander 2.2 TD4 S - Manual £21,695.00
Rimini Red - Metallic £540.00
17 inch 6-Spoke Alloy Wheels £400.00
Ebony/Ebony Cloth
Heated exterior mirrors with electric adjustment and powerfold £205.00
Auto headlamps £200.00
Rear tailgate mounted spoiler £150.00
Privacy glass £345.00
Automatic windscreen wipers
Xenon Front Lighting with headlamp washers and front fog lamps £995.00
Automatic climate control with air filtration £300.00
Front and rear carpet mats £80.00
Rear centre headrest £40.00
COLD CLIMATE PACK Heated screen and heated screen washers £250.00
SEAT PACK Rear centre armrest and head rest with storage compartment and two cupholders £160.00
Vehicle Subtotal:   £25,360.0

Freelander 2.2 TD4 GS - Manual £24,995.00
Rimini Red - Metallic £540.00
17 inch 6-Spoke Alloy Wheels £0.00
Ebony/Ebony Cloth
Rear tailgate mounted spoiler £150.00
Privacy glass £345.00
Xenon Adaptive Front Lighting £995.00
Front and rear carpet mats £80.00
COLD CLIMATE PACK Heated screen and heated screen washers £250.00
Vehicle Subtotal:   £27,355.00

Thanks,

i came to the same conclusion as you .....see my thread about MY10 specs....cant post a link as im on a mobile device.
Debate is the future values of the two models.
But the prices show that the GS is significantly overpriced when compared to the S.

That's a rip off - £200 for auto lamps. Most models have that as standard so wiring will almost certainly be there & I would guess that is £200 for a different switch Censored

Give me £27K (assuming that clears finance lol) & you can have my Rimini Red 2010HSE with all it's extras except Xenons. (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.
(Past) RR Evoque Dynamic Lux Si4 In Firenze Red.
(Past) RR Evouque Pure Tech in Barollo Black with bespoke Firenze Red colour coding.
(Present) Freelander Metropolis 2015 MY In Santorini Black with Ivory Premium Leather.

Won't it need a light sensor that higher spec versions have?

The point I was making was by upgrading the S even if the upgrades seem high priced individually ie £200 to change the auto lights, overall you get the same spec car as the GS for £2000 less.

I have a GS with leather seats, sat nav, DVD player, bluetooth, Voice recon etc

It just seemed interesting when I read the S now comes with terrain response, which on previous years models was not an option to upgrade.

Thanks,

I have been seriously thinking of downgrading my original SE for a new GS but you have now given me food for thought - back to the drawing board for yet another look.

Thanks

Tony

I would doublecheck with a dealer that the s has terrain response as it doesn't in the new brochure. I would guess this would account for the 2k diff in price.

Worth a check indeed but LR online spec document says it does TR on the S model... http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic6600.html

You can add nearly everything I'd want on a FL2 on an S and save £2k in the process over a GS.

Although I grant the old FL2 S models didn't retain their value as well as higher spec modesl - will this be the case if the newer ones are less poverty spec...be interesting to watch I reckon

If the S really has TR as standard, can't think of anything else you really need. Might as well just buy an S in the colour you want. Definitely less to go wrong. I only say check as the new brochure definitely has TR as a discriminating feature of the GS over the S. Only thing worth adding might be the Cold Climate Pack over the base spec. I really cannot see what the extra £10K + goes on for an HSE. For example, you could (almost!) have 2 S's for the price of one HSE!

Which ever way you cut it the spec on the on-line site says TR is standard.

James (LPR) - Can you confirm? There's always a way forward!

I am not aware of it being made standard on S models, as this was not highlighted in the 2011my product brief. I have put an email in to LR and will report back.

They have also said from day one that HSE models have DAB radio as standard. You should hear the spectacular load or Censored that the dealers come up with to avoid / deny that issue. One of the greatest pieces of mis-selling that I have ever seen. I'm amazed that LR have not been take to court over it. They probably have a "specification is subject to change without prior notice" clause.... Buyer Beware!!

Sit in a 2011 S and check it is there... Hi Darling, I'll be home in 10 mins. If I'm not back, please read this message again...

LPR - Check your brochures then as the one I got from my dealer (inc the nice A4 flier) said no TR on S. Wink

My brochure also says that it is not fitted to the 'S', however I was asked to ask Land Rover and their response was:

Morning James, I can confirm that Terrain Response is standard on all S models as from 11MY.

I have also montioned the close comparison between S and GS once an S is specified to GS levels.

My advice is, if in doubt, confirm with the dealer before ordering. When we take our first S order I will be examining the order sheet carefully to confirm it's there.

I have asked for clarification a 2nd time, and will advise if an error has been made.
