Oil consumption: what's yours?

Just reached 5000 miles and I needed a litre of oil to to take the level back to the upper mark on the dipstick. Does this match the experiences of others or might there be a leak or worse?

Have to say I've never needed to top up my oil after 19000miles. Phil

Me neither. Nor on my last two discos. But engines do vary.

No probs Nigel, unless you are charging round like a 'boy racer'. I found exactly the same, and it was concerning, up to about 10k then, mysteriously, I stopped burning oil. In the following 42k on my first FL2 I never (between services) put another drop of oil in to the engine. Its replacement is on 9k now and on checking the level this morning it did not need a top-up. It must be weeks, and 2-3k ago, since I last put oil in?
Some won't agree but I suspect its an old fashioned 'running-in' thing? Just perhaps? Hope this helps.
By the way, buy your Magnatec from Tesco. It's the cheapest I have found. Firenze Red XS TD4 01/2013 . Averaging 1800 miles per month. My 5th Freelander in 11 years. Devotee?

Mine seemed to need a fair bit of topping up at first but now at just over 40k it uses hardly any Thumbs Up

2007, TD4, manual, 32k miles. When I bought the car from the dealers with 22k on the clock the oil level was about 5mm above the top mark which I didn't think was recommended. However, at about 30k miles I topped up with 1/2 litre. So I suppose consumption would be about 12k miles per litre. A lot of the driving was on motorway and in the summer which would increase consumption.

Mine has used 1.5 litres in the first 12 months and 9000 miles. Not a problem. My previous D3s also used the same.

Remember it’s a Ford engine and they sell the same oil for a lot less than land Rover A Land Rover owner since 1988

I do not know the the litre difference between the limit marks on the dipstick but Emily just manages to get to the next service before the need for a top up. Now thats what I call calibration! still pining for my 3dr, no removeable hardtop, no drop glass tailgate, no roof rack, no pockets everywhere to stow all that man kit

Thanks to all for the reassurances.
This is my first Freelander and it is the first time in over ten years that I have had to top up a vehicle with oil between services so it is good to know that it is not unusual for the FL2. It is also the first time in over ten years that I had had to buy some oil over the counter as opposed to having the cost hidden in the overall cost of the service. I was surprised how expensive it is.

Using a little oil is Not a problem, both my FL2's used alittle for first 4-5k miles then reduced to virtually nothing.
A little advice, do not wait till minimum before topping up as consumption increases as level goes down, top up even a small ammount 2 or 3 times rather than litre.

Giving away my age here, when Morris Minor and A30 used the 848cc A series engine cars that used 1pint to 500 miles from new usually lasted about 50000 miles before an exchange engine, cars that used no oil in early life often had engines changed or new pistons before 30000miles. Oil changes were every 3000 miles or 6 months.

Oil to correct spec for FL 2 is certainly much cheaper from Ford Dealer and most likely what is in them from factory. All FL2's (3) Gone

Druand,
Your A30 was better than ours. We used more oil than petrol!!
Secondhand engine cost 5 quid!!
Then the propshaft coupling disintegrated. At the geabox end. Upset my Gran somewhat who was sitting in the back at the time.

Then we had a Moggie. Something very loveable about that car. You protected it like a member of your family even when it misbehaved. And Moggie owners always spoke to each other. And, there are still so many on the road today.

Next was a MK1 Escort. Nice car.

But it was coming down form a Moggie.

I loved the A series and the SU's. We could fix 'em and all the bits were in all the scrapyards. You could run 'em on a shoestring, even the Mini.

Thanks for reminding me of those lovely days.

Back to the thread.

Mine uses no oil, 19K

Had a Rover 75 CDTi used no oil after 120K.

And all the parts that failed on it were BMW!!
