Radio Reception

When I start up my Freelander 2, the radio takes ages to tune into the local and any other radio stations on the FM band.

Anyone else finding this?

Cheers.

Andy

The FL2 (57 GS spec) RDS radio is one of the worst I've encountered in a car for many years... but not entirely useless (unfortunately, or I'd have been ranting at the dealers).

IF you've tuned in (say) R2 in Southampton and stored it on a pre-set, but then move to Norwich it will retune to the different transmitters on the journey. (Sometimes very reluctantly, hanging on to the weak/multipathy signal rather than AF switching as a good RDS radio should). When you next turn on the radio, it seems to tune to the Southampton frequency (Rowridge) - which is un-receivable - rather than the last frequency it used in Norwich (Tacolneston). I'm usually too impatient to wait for it to search for the station via PS/PI code - if it ever does - and manually seek.

If the stations are in the pre-sets on the correct (home) transmitter then it fires up with sound almost immediately.

{NB I've played with more car radios than you can shake a stick at in my professional career.}

Tried FM today, no problems it tuned in nice and quick!
AM was all foreign languages. (didn't stay long enough to get any English progs.)
DAB, as always quick and with no fade.
Mind you, my car is only a few weeks old. Very Happy

My car has been at my local LR garage to get a few issues sorted today - one of which was the radio taking time to find stations and re-tuning itself whist driving.

Had a phone call from them saying they were waiting for parts to solve some of the other issues - but the radio issue was due to the tinting on the back and side windows as that is where the aerials are located and the tints were blocking the reception!

Not sure how true that is or if you have tinted windows but thought I would add incase it was a possibility. Thinking about asking another LR garage to have a look into the radio issue as i'm sure there are several of Freelander 2's with tinted windows and don't have an issue with radio tuning.

Just to add, mine has tints & I get zero reception/radio issues - so it must be a problem elsewhere.....

Sounds like dealer BS to me! I have tints on mine and have no prolems with the radio. How is a layer of plastic on the INSIDE of the window going to effect the aerial on the side window? The fact that they mention the rear window suggests they don't know what they are talking about !

i would have thought a 4mm piece of glass would have had more radio waves blocking potential than and 0.5mm thick piece of film

To see if there correct, maybe somebody without tints, could cover there rear side windows in cling film and then tinfoil to see if the radio fails

My radio is the same as yours - seems to have a mind of its own at times.

Can I upgrade the Alpine player in my HSE so that I can use DAB?
Only got FM and AM today, but the FM button has a "digital" mark on it. Smile

This bloke is still yet to sell this!!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/09-LAND-ROVER-FREELA...016wt_1137

According to my dealer they can retrofit DAB, but it would cost about £ 1500!! Now I'm not sure where this figure comes from and sounds a bit like they don't want to do it. There is a list somewhere of all the parts that are required.

Thing is, if they are turning off the Analogue signal in 2014 (I think) then there will be a shed load of people out there with car radios that are basically useless.
