A little re-assurance over level of diesel tickover noise?

Hi it's me again.

Had my 'Pre-owned' 2 year old 2008 HSE for about 4 weeks now. With a lot of help from this Forum most gripes are sorted and I am very pleased with my purchase.

I have never owned a diesel before and I am a little concerned about the noise the engine makes in tickover.

Land Rover garage say there is nothing amiss. A friend who has had Freelanders for many years says it's a characteristic of the Puegot Engine and nothing to worry about (although he has not heard it). Apparently the previous engines were BMW's and quieter in tickover.

I would welcome comments if only to put my mind at rest.

Otherwise great car.

Regards,
AndrewPRD

Indeed, the Peugeot engines are a little noisy especially when cold.
For sure louder, in any situation, than a BMW engine.
For your peace of mind, you can find a lot of movies on Youtube where you can hear the engine noise of different FL2s and compare them with yours.

It is a touch on the noisey side. Youtube's a good idea, and at some point you'll be outside or at some lights and one will pull up next to you.

Also, they sound a bit gruffer when cold. Mine: 2012 Golf GTI Edition 35

When was the last oil change and what was used?

My engine has quite a noisy tickover, but it's not too intrusive. My car's done 28k now and the engine noise is the same as my Dad's FL2, with 5k on the clock. I'd say there's nothing to worry about. First time I drove a FL2 - I was surprised how noisy the engine was at idle and low speeds.
Sounded very old school diesel.

Hi Andy, if you are really that concerned, go down to a well-know high street electronics shop and buy a 'digital sound meter' at £35 new. Measure the noise at set positions and distances in front of your car and compare it to others of mates or at the dealers etc. Could then flog the meter on fleabay and get some of your money back. Bit pricey, but would let you know one way or the other.

OK

I don't think I need to resort to noise meters and my thanks to you all.

Gladly put up with a slightly noisier engine if there is nothing amiss.

Also very impressed with the engines performance. I tried a lot of the 4x4 alternatives and the FL2 was by far the best - In my opinion!!

You could always try adding 2 stroke oil, many have said this reduces the tickover sound.

Tried the two stoke oil for last three weeks made absolutely no difference. Changing the engine oil was mentioned. Car had a full service three months (1000 miles ago). Don't think I need to worry about the oil unless there is something I should know about.

This is the noisiest diesel I've heard apart from neighbours flat bed truck which is about the same.

Am finding this quite frustrating for such an expensive car. Please don't suggest ear plugs or turning up the stereo.

Very pleased with everything else just the clatter from engine when cold and on tickover.

Dave,

No it wasn't a silly question. The oil level is OK but very black!!
Like I said it had a full service 1000 miles ago and the Dealer said a further oil change now would be a waste of money. Black oil is a worry though and I would have thought after only 1000 miles it should be pretty clean?

Also the dip stick is twisted, a bit like a cork screw. Is this normal?
I did not want to show my lack of knowledge but thought I might ask on this site.

Thank you for taking the time to help.

Regards,

AndrewPRD

The twisted dip stick is normal.
The black oil, too. Oil in Diesel engines gets black VERY fast. But it's nothing to worry about.

Thank you for the re-assurance.

This is my first diesel so I was not aware that oil goes black fast. Also twisted dip stick very strange. Anyway I think from what I have learned oil probably not the problem.

Might try a different diesel V-Power no station closeby so BP Ultimate diesel might be worth a try perhaps?

My son came tonight with his 3 yr old VW Toureg diesel. Much quieter!

Regards,

AndrewPRD
