Re programming a key fob ........

Has anybody had any dealings with the key fobs?

I bought one off a mate, dropped it in at my main dealer to be reprogrammed to my car (£50), they called me back 5 hours later to say it can not be reprogrammed to my car as it is not blank , its been programmed to another car.

They can supply me with a blank for £210 !!!!!! Is this true?

It sounds a bit fishy....... the keys can be programmed but not re programmed, so we can only get more keys from Dealer not between owners.

Any advice would be great before i buy a key as my FL2 only has 1 and even though i have never lost a car key in my life, Ive always had 2, the one time I have one!!!!!!!! Big Cry

£210 was for a key, programming and a new blade cutting.

I've looked at the other thread ...... LR asked for the key back .........!!!!! Why...... I could donate the key but I had negotiated a refund of from my mate...... due to it been useless.

These are a bit less than the £210 quoted.

WILL NEED TO BE REPROGRAMMED BY YOUR LOCAL DEALER

doesn't reprogramming mean it's already been programmed and therefore useless Wink Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I'll be watching the used eBay item. If it's cheap I'll bash it open to learn from it. It is possible for the electronics to be a 'write once' type so it may be useless other than for inspection - I'll know better when I see inside one.
Obviously, it is a security item so I'm not expecting recoding to be very straightforward, even if it's possible, but my primary concern is to extend the life of our own keys since they won't last forever....

I can confirm s/hand keys can't be used or reprogrammed, they are code once only. I have tried to reprogram using IDS/SDD & it won't work, only brand new keys

Please elaborate Steve.

If you'd care to donate any unusable fobs for dissection please let me know.

Hi,
IDS the dealer tool is now SDD, symptom driven diagnostics. A new format using the same hardware.

I have no spare keys, as a customer wanted me to try to use a second hand one he brought.
I assume the technology is the same as other immobilser chipped keys, like Volvo, where the chip is one shot program. A new key is in a virgin state & can be programmed to any F2, it is not specific to a particular vehicle until programmed.
I would imagine the only way to viginise a key would be renew whichever chip is written to, unless it is just a software restriction, which prevents SDD from programming a key which is tagged as used, in which case someone like Blackbox (BBS) will be able to write a method of bypassing that.

Regards
Steve

The likelihood is that the memory technology is re-writeable but the software prevents re-coding for security reasons. The IC that stores any coding is unfortunately also likely to store the firmware for the fob so changing it would require first programming the firmware but with initialised coding registries. Until I see inside one, this is all based on logical assumption. I'm more interested in extending the life of our own fobs but a work-around for re-coding would be useful too - but I suspect unlikely without the source code from Landrover.
