I have an original Casio Digital Circa 1977 and still going strong and only needs a new battery every 18-24 months, It serves me well and I haven't been late for work or an appointment since.
It's Probably worth a few quid to a museum but it does me and I cannot understand the mentality of spending obscene amounts on a fancy watch, unless of course if your name is Wayne Rooney or Cashley Cole.

Hi Junior,

A good watch is like a good pair of shoes. Get one and you'll never go back. you can skim on a few things in life, but they arn't one of them.

I had a Casio years ago when they made calculators. Dunno what happened it it, someone probably swipped it.

I agree a good watch has to be accurate, but I also accept I have to adjust mine and those few extra seconds a day makes absolutely no difference in my life. I'd take a mechanical over quartz every time.
To me, a watch is more than telling the time, just like a car is more than A-B transport. Phil

Just two comments from the Swiss alps this sunny morning:

1: For a man's watch it has to be IWC - the rest are for boys or girlies or those in between Exclamation

2: Idea If you want a quality Swiss watch buy them at the airports here duty free, or better still come skiing in Samnaun (terrific huge ski arena cross border into Austria) and the whole valley "Samnauntal"is a special duty free zone due to its history and remote location. Beats shopping in any airport "jungle" anywhere in the world. Thumbs Up

England 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Auto Zermatt Silver

For years and years I wanted a Rolex GMT Master and must have spent a small forune on different brands every year or two trying to make sure I hade one which looked and felt right. Not to mention SWMBO being completely brassed off looking in jewellers windows at the Rolex offerings. I was not interested in Breitling, Omega TAG or any of the others, Just the Rolex. Anyway my 50th birthday yielded my Rolex GMT Master 2 and I have never looked in a jewellers shop window for the last 14 years. I wear it all the time except for bed and sometimes have to wash cememnt or other household grunge off it but it still looks brand new. Timing is as good as digital even though its an automatic and I love it! Nick, make sure you have the one you really want never mind the cost as it will save you money and time in the future. Ralph

Athelstan - yep, you have a point, some of the IWC watches are cool. Thanks for the tip fe Switzerlands duty Free area. I'll have to look at the map. Very Happy

RalphK - I think you have encapsulated how people should feel about a nice watch. Bow down

That said, I don't take it off in bed. I do take it off for a bath or a shower. Yes, I do gardening in it. The barcelet does get some small scratches on it, but nothing a Dremel with a fine polishing bit wouldn't take out.

At a dinner so years ago just as the coffee was being served The Chairman asked in a voice that could be heard throughout the room "Can anyone tell me the time" and immediately 20 guys who belonged to the organisation shot their cuffs to show their identical Omega Seamaster watches and replied with the time which got a laugh from all of us guests to the dinner.

Explanation is that the Chairman had been to Hong Kong and bought 20 watches for his members at £20 each.

Have to say I know several of these guys who are still using the watches which are keeping accurate time as even the counterfeiters use Seiko movements.

Myself I use a Bulova stainless steel cased unit that cost me £75 as watches get damaged frequently when working on construction sites, but this one is still going strong after 10 years. Never wear a watch when out socialising as there is always someone with a big expensive watch who will tell you the time.

PS Cannot tell you the name of the organisation hosting the dinner as "It is a secret" and I would have to kill you all. Life Honorary Member of Wallasey Motor Club.

When my mate first got the omega he was really plesed with himself and he was giving it 12o'clock Omega time!!!!

One day in the pub he was omega this and omega that, when asked at the bar what time it was he gave the omega time line, only for one of the other regulars to say you need to get it checked as it's 5 past 1 Rolex time....... Pulling his cuff up to show £12k of diamond encrusted Rolex Shocked

All down to personal choice, the most accurate is a £10 petrol station battery quartz jobby, but if you like the look of a posh watch buy it. i have a Tag automatic for worst, a seamaster automatic for cycling/gardening etc, and a rolex for everyday. but then I do like watches Confused

I find the good thing with Rolex watches is that the resale value is always high.

Not exactly....

Officially certified chronometers loose -4 or +6 seconds per day. Not that accurate, but they are not fixed so that may be +6 one day and - 4 the next (over longer periods they are 99.994% accurate). They are extremely accurate over a longer period of time, whereas a quartz mechanism will loose or gain a fixed amount on a daily basis, it will get more and more inaccurate.

Buy a watch with the Atomic clock thing on it, never, ever out!!! Hi Darling, I'll be home in 10 mins. If I'm not back, please read this message again...
