I read in the forum about cars of '56 plate, '58 plate etc.

Can one of you translate to me what that means? I have no idea what you guys mean by that.  2010 Freelander 2 Select TD4 auto....gone

It's the age identifier.
Cars registered in the 1 March–31 August period are 0x: 2006 - 06, 2007 - 07, etc.
Cars registered in the 1 September–28 February period are 5x: 2006/2007 - 56, 2007/2008 - 57, etc.

To be pedantic that should read
Cars registered in the 1 March–31 August period are the last two digits of the year: 2006 - 06, 2010 - 10, etc.
Cars registered in the 1 September–28 February period are the last two digits of the year PLUS 50: 2006/2007 - 56, 2010/2011 - 60, etc.

No, our 60 plates don't come out until 1st september 2010, your car will probaly be a 59 if you bought it after the 1st of september 2009. to help you understand our plates will be like this

xx09 xx59 xx10 xx60 xx11 xx61 and will continue until 2050 when they reach 100.

From around 1963 until 2001 the British plates were so much easier to understand & far better when the alphabet was used as a prefix or suffix & were issued annually on the 1st of August until 1998 when the six monthly thing started.

I believe initially back in the 1960's the registrations started on the 1st of January which would be the easiest way to have kept it IMO then changed to the August slot around 1967 or 8 I think (on the "E" suffix).
i.e 1st of August 1982 to July 31st 1983 - ABC 123Y
Then 1st August 1983 to 31st July 1984 - A123 ABC which ran until it reached Y123 ABC from March 1st 2001 until 31st August 2001 when the present format began - GF 51 ABC. The letters & numbers re examples for our foreign members knowledge. (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.
