United States 2008 Freelander 2 i6 SE Auto Tambora Flame
3.2 Anti Drain Valve

All,

I decided to make a new thread about this since both of my 3.2's (LR2 and S80) have experienced this failure at about 10 years.

Here is what the manual says.

The part that we are discussing here is the last sentence shown above

Here is the part that fails if you find disc during an oil change then you have this problem

Here is the broken assembly

Here is a new assembly

To fix my LR2 I did the following

I bought the Volvo assembly (31272677) and I removed the spring inside the housing by bending back the fingers.

Then I installed the new part into my existing housing

To fix the S80

I bought the Volvo assembly again (31272677) and I replaced the entire assembly

The difference between the Volvo and Land Rover assembly is explained very well here

2010 S80 - no external oil line
2008 LR2 - with external oil line

Info from the IPD Volvo website

The application breaks look complicated but the physical identification is easy. If your cooler has an external oil line bolted to the outside of the cooler, you have the earlier design (139778). Later models have no external oil line to the cooler (139779), just water/coolant lines with hose clamps.

Why fix it and not just ignore it? the oil pump is fill the housing and if the rubber disc is missing then the oil circulates back to the sump and insufficient oil pressure is generated for the rest of the engine.

What I don't know? Can the later housing be fitted to an earlier engine without any negative effects.

Good Luck

Paul
