Diesel Engine

Hi Guys....was just wandering if anyone knew who makes the diesel 2.2 engine for the Freelander 2. Is it a LR engine or does it belong to another company and used in the FR2

The 2.2 L is produced by the Ford/PSA joint venture. This particular engine was designed by Ford at their Dunton and Whitley research centres. Based on compatible engine block PSA DW12.

PSA DW12
The 2.2 L (2179 cc) DW12 has a bore of 85 mm (3.3 in) and a stroke of 96 mm (3.8 in). Unlike the initial DW10 designs, it was fitted with 16 valves from the beginning, and made its debut in the 2000 with the Citroën C5 and Peugeot 607, being used only in the larger models. In 2006 it was added to the PSA/Ford family, with power reaching 170 PS (125 kW). Land Rover currently uses this engine in the new Freelander where it produces 160PS. This is Ford's only current use for this engine, which is expected to power the next generations of both the Mondeo and Jaguar X-Type. A different 2.2L engine, Ford's ZSD-422 with a displacement of 2198 cc, will be used in the Peugeot LCV range of vans.

I had a test drive of a Outlander 2 years ago and it had a 2.0 VW TDi 138ps, nice engine, Censored everything else, flimsy interior, 3rd row of seats was like a 70's deck chair in fact the type of car that would look good chromed up Whistle with an arab driving it.

The Outlander has just been revised with a better quality interior, new front and 2.2 TDi standard engine. On paper, the road performance looks about the same as for FL2. Standard equipment is better than on a HSE with automatic and leather included in the price on models sold here at least. The third row of seats in any car is just a joke so to even comment on them is meaningless. The price is far cheaper than a FL2 and comes with a 5-year guarantee Thumbs Up .

The main difference is of course lack the status of a LR and how good or bad it is off road – probably good enough for most FL2 soft (asphalt) road drivers who never see even a gravel track (like many on this forum).

So Doc and Rowy, you may scoff at the mention of an Outlander, but then you must have more cash stuffed away for car purchase than many other potential 4x4 owners. Here in Norway and probably other countries (other than the UK) LR is losing out to Tiguan, Outlander, RAV4, CVR and even the Korean copies - lets hope the UK and Indian ecconomy keep LR alive Whistle 2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Very reasoned response AndyC - however it will take more than just the UK & India economies to secure LR's future.

I would agree that the Outlander is a very competant value for money vehicle, and does not deserve to be slagged off.

it was on our shortlist and we had a good test drive which impressed us both.

you do not not sit as high as in the FL2 and we felt that we were sitting in a raised saloon, so that was about the main downside.

also it does not have the Landrover pedigree, which is a big thing in a lot of peoples' minds.

My wife and I looked at all the vehicles of this type before buying the FL2 - it was a clear winner by a mile and is the safest out of the bunch by a mile Thumbs Up
