Key fob batteries and pairing

As you guys now I recently purchased an 07 GS.
So i may be the first with this one as the previous owner dosent appear to have been rotating the key fobs as stated in the manual Shocked , and today i have been using it to try to charge it but to no avail. Big Cry

So,
1 Can i get a new battery for the fob ? Question
2 If I can, will it require pairing ? Question

Cheers.

This is an interesting subject. None of our fobs will last for ever. The battery has a finite life and as time goes by more of us will begin to see fobs fail. There's no reason to dispose of the whole fob when the battery fails. If we can get into them without destroying the case it will be possible to replace the battery - it is highly unlikely to be a battery unique to Landrover.
As for programming, the codes will be stored in memory - probably EEPROM onboard a microcontroller. This is likely to be non-volatile (retained even if battery is flat). If it's volatile then that would need reprogramming. If we can work that out without the dealer then we've got it covered, but they may have us by the short-n-curlies there??

If you get nowhere with this we can try split it open and replace the cell.

If its Capacitor it should be good for life.
As far as I know they have no set life cycle.

I have carried both keys with me today, and opened the car and closed it with my original one, and drove with the spare to try to charge it. (30 minutes).

It did open the car once but not after the charge time.

there is a body on ebay today, but with no internals,

Forgot to mention that I work in automotive and we work directly with Land Rover.
I speak with Land Rover chasis engineering on a weekly basis including Body control engineering.
I'll see if I can get some answers from them.

In the meantime i'll try some more charging time.

Do you have 'key insurance'? you often get it lumped into a bank account or car insurance policy. If you have and you 'lost' your key they would provide you with a new set...

It's possible to do it with a capacitor but the power requirements of an RF transmitter would normally mean that a capacitor store supply would be unsuitable. For one thing, the discharge curve is nearer linear meaning you'd soon run out of charge after a few presses without docking. A battery (Li-Ion, NiMH, LiPolymer) has a near flat discharge curve, dropping off rapidly when near depletion.

Do you have a link to any info on the internals? I'd be very interested to see inside but not so interested as to attack my own with tools!

Hi lar

Your English is good and accumulator is defined as ...

accumulator noun 1 elec engineering a storage battery that can be recharged by passing a current through it from an external direct current supply.

The best translation I can give you is ...

The battery is recharged when the engine is running. 09 HSE Auto Lago Grey/Almond Napoli. Privacy glass.

How long does it take to re-charge, I have a spare that will only just turn off the alarm but as I only do short journeys I dont think that I can get it fully charged.

Also is there a charger that allows one to charge the remote on main electricity?

With the unit being totally enclosed how does the in car charge take effect?

Inductive charging.. Wink I've heard you can use an inductive charge mat to charge your car keys!! Works the same as the BMW key...

I've also heard (from the dealer so I take it eith a pinch of salt) that the key has a 15yr life Shocked Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints

Oh and anyones tempted to buy a spare key of tatbay... I''ve heard that the key can only be programmed once... so if you find one advertised as needing 'reprogramming; or if its been used on another car, leave it as you cant reprogram them Whistle Freelander 2 TD4 Auto, SE, Narvik Black, Alpaca full leather, Rear Headrest Entertainment System, 6 CD, 18 HSE Wheels, Privicy tints
