How to repair / rebuild manual gearbox of TD4 2012?

Hi, has somebody opened the manual gearbox of Evoque to change any bearing in it? It's same kind Getrag M66 transmission used in Freelander 2, Volvo and some Ford models, and Volvo owners has repaired those but how about for FL2 & Evoque?
If yes, then like to hear some details about opening the case and change of bearings etc

Hello UK, Hello Australia and many thanks to accepting me to this great forum - did not ever owned Freelander 2 but had Freelander KV6 for some years and after that came Evoque

Thanks, there in FL2 and Evoque manuals are instructions how to change gearbox but not how to repair it - I can understand because nowadays it’s more common to change parts and repairing is not the focus of garages - also Volvo don’t have any instructions to repair gearbox Evoque 2012, TD4

Hi, I had to take my gearbox apart to remove the splined shaft off the end of the diff as it had seized sold and I had to cut it off.
Didn't replace any bearings as they were all ok.
Not particularly difficult if you wanted to change maybe one faulty bearing, but you would need a method to measure the end float if you replaced more than one. Most expensive part was the loctite to re assemble the gearbox together, about £40 a tube

Hi and thanks - you hit the point - there is a noise from the transmission and when I push the clutch down the noise stops. I replaced the clutch and the noise is still there, my guess is that the noise is coming from the input shaft bearing. If I open the transmission and replace this bearing, how can I measure the end float and what value should it be?
Same question is coming up with other parts, if they need to remove and change. I did not found any service manual for the gearbox but still googling for it Smile Evoque 2012, TD4

I think you would be ok with replacing one bearing as you won't affect the preload too much. I don't know how you can measure the end float or what the specs would be. I would imagine you would have to use a dial tester on the end of the shaft but I don't know how you would move the shaft up and down with the gearbox bolted up.
Check out Alan Howatt on YouTube as he has a couple of videos of Ford gearboxes that he has replaced individual bearings and the gearbox is very similar.

Yes, video of transmission on the Ford Mondeo Mk5 2L Diesel looks something like what the FL2 might be - I will investigate further and also ask the Volvo guys about the repairs they have done. Have a nice day and thanks for the hint Smile Evoque 2012, TD4

Back in the 70's I rebuilt a Ford escort manual gearbox with a noisy input shaft bearing and the biggest problem was getting the input shaft bearing off the shaft which required a garage press. Getting the new one on was easier as I left the input shaft in the deep freeze for a few hours and heated the new bearing in a plastic bag in a kettle of boiling water. In those days the DIY manuals had exploded views and assumed that owners could do this sort of stuff. Nowadays you would be hard pressed to find a garage that would do this.
I seem to remember thinking that a gearbox was like watch making on a grand scale. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

It might be worth talking with Austen at Bell Engineering. They do reconditioned gearboxes. I know that you don’t want to buy new but by the time you’ve acquired the equipment and skills to solve a problem that you haven’t diagnosed yet it might be a better answer.

Hi and thats also s good point, in my nightmare I can see myself opening the gearbox and all parts are falling down to the floor Smile I remember those manuals and in that time the idea was that one can repair parts, not only change to new ones but nowadays manuals are mainly to help remove and changing the parts Evoque 2012, TD4

I have about 230 000 km on the clock and in principle the reconditioned gearbox is not bad idea - on other side, I have a good selection of basic tools and change of one bearing is not a big deal. More questions are rising up, if there is need of other works where my knowledge is not enough.
In Finland the price for reconditioned gearbox is about 2500 € but price for rebuild kit is around 400 €.
Price in Bell is around 1000 € + freight + customs, so my guess for total is 1700 €

the end of the thread is - I was able to buy a new gearbox for 2000€ and put it in place - the sound is gone Smile Evoque 2012, TD4
