Today the front passenger side wheel started making a noise I can only describe as a steam train or a little like a flat tyre. It only does it while coasting, if you accelerate or break that noise goes away but once you coast again it starts. Had my wife drive the car slowly while I could look in the arch. Nothing noticed, at first when in the arch I though it sounded like the spring could have gone and was creaking every half turn of the tyre or so but didn’t look like it any damage was apparent. Anyone any idea why it would be making the noise while coasting and not while accelerating or breaking and what it could be?

Wheel bearing failing? under load its subjected to torque and doesn't have the same 'play'.
My osf bearing was a little noisy, squeaking noise around 15-20 mph in slow moving traffic, goes away when travelling faster, except now its stopped the noise completely. Fully expect to have to replace it shortly. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

To check the front wheel bearings.
Pull out the haldex ("on-demand coupling") fuse (look in your manual for which one as its varies .
Now you have front wheel drive only.
Ignore the alerts - they will clear when you put the fuse back and drive the car 50m or so.
Jack up the car so both front wheels are off the ground. (2 hydraulic jacks or axle stands) - make sure its stable. I wouldnt use the car's jack.
Chock the rear wheels and keep manual hand brake ON.
Get someone to drive the car to give an indicated 30 mph on the speedo - feeding the torque in and out gently.
Feel the coil spring in each strut and compare.
The worn side should have an obvious vibration that the good side doesn't.

Ive just had mine replaced at the local garage. £80 for hub with bearing + £100 labour (removing knuckle and pressing hub + bearing in and out) +VAT (=£216) Jules

A basic check, is the rim hotter than the other side. You don't want a runaway thermal event that will explode a tyre. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
