LR removable towbar - design fault

Took Babe in today to have a horrendous bang or clunk investigated when towing.
The noise could not be traced to when I was braking, heavy down force, or opposite, but was intermittent and not repeatable at will.

Dealer did a major tighten up of rear of car but could find no fault with Babe or towbar mounts. When they contacted LR they were informed that there is a design modification in progress which will be available mid June. Fault is not safety critical so can continue towing until mod is actioned.

I had this noise three times last weekend and checked around but couldnt find anything amiss. I assumed it was probably the jockey wheel touching the road on a bumpy road.

Just contacted LR Customer Services who know nothing of this problem and told me to contact the dealer who told me they were not aware of any problem either. !!

Yes please keep us posted on that. Have you a date for it or did they just say mid June ?
I may contact Brink tomorrow to see if they can throw any light on it. Anything positive and I will post it on here.

No, not a definite date but mid June was quoted and as we are trvelling to Cornwall on the 21st I wanted to ensure that the mod. was carried out beforehand. The dealer could not say that it was definite but as the issue was not safety critical it was not a concern. (It may not be SC but the sound makes you think that either a spring breaks or something similar). Ralph

Tried to find a number for Brink without success. The number on their website is for John Cooper Towing 01724 850888.
Spoke to a lady who was very helpful but said the guy who I would need to talk to was on holiday.
She told me to call back on Monday an she would discuss my question with him,so hopefully I will post again then.

Ralphk,
I had written about this before as I have been one of the other sufferers of this problem. Dealer said that the minute amount of play was usual for these, but I improved it by removing the bar, putting some thick grease around the lugs and refitting. Problem didn't go away but was greatly reduced. Next time I tow I will do the same again. I think in future I will stick with a fixed towbar.
John.

before I collected my new FL the dealer allowed me to have a demonstrator fitted with this towbar for 5 days I towed from S Wales to North Devon and experienced this knocking about 4 times.

I recently collected my new Freelander and have towed about 100 miles and not a sound I'm just wondering is it down to the quality of the fitting ? Home is where my caravan takes me.

I have suffered from this very alarming noise too - intermittent and by and large unpredictable. I tried the grease suggestion before one outing and it has almost eliminated it since then. (May need a dab more on now).

Haven't spoken to my dealer - but perhaps should do.

Never had a peep out of the Citroen C5 removable bar (but it fitted in a different, much more positive, way). AFAIR it was also by Brink.
