Nullarbor fires traffic stopped

The Nullarbor is actually a small section but fires have stopped traffic on the Eyre Highway east of Norseman.

https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2020-01-01/...s/11836476

Our neighbours left 10 days ago to drive to Perth with a detour or two, sealed roads only. I gave them a list of things they should take. 2 of the key items were:

2 x 10 litres water packs minimum backup.
A few rolls of toilet paper & some soap.

Just think what these things are worth now! You don't need to break down out there, a fire is enough to leave you stranded!

The other problem is people have no fresh food due to quarantine restrictions, so only buy fresh food when you get to your destination, & you can't get there due to the fires!

Not to forget the extreme heat with northerly winds which I mentioned. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

About 140 firefighters are battling eight fire fronts that have cut off the small WA town of Norseman, about 700 kilometres south-east of Perth, for extended periods since the first blaze began on December 16.

The situation escalated recently when authorities advised the Eyre Highway — the only sealed road linking Western Australia and South Australia — would be closed for at least the next five days.

"There's quite a restriction on the water supply from the roadhouse," he said.

"Bottles are on sale but they're quite expensive at $6 a pop for a litre and a half.

"Tap water, which is drinkable, just trickles out.

"The basics we need are toilet paper and soap otherwise you've got another health issue that's going to pop up and cause all sorts of problems." Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Information from ABC

Garnaut Report in 2008 - “Fire seasons will start earlier, end later and be more intense. This effect increases over time but should be directly observable by 2020.”

It rained in Sale yesterday so everyone there is a little less worried and some residents are being allowed to return to their properties in the danger zones east of Sale. Jules

My daughter and her colleagues went up to the Fire and Emergency Services base camp at Swan Reach, East Gippsland to offer free osteopathic treatments to injured and exhausted service personnel.

Its going to be a very long haul before the fires are out. Jules

god speed to the emergency workers, Thumbs Up Hell of a job . Must be hard on moral putting out fires when new ones are popping up all the time. or winds change and make your fire break redundant. At work

The prehistoric Wollemi Pines, which pre-date the dinosaurs, have been saved by a specialist team of remote firefighters from bushfires ravaging the area.

Environment Minister Matt Kean said the trees are in a secret location to avoid contamination and were thought to be extinct before 1994.

"Wollemi National Park is the only place in the world where these trees are found in the wild and, with less than 200 left, we knew we needed to do everything we could to save them," Mr Kean said.

The operation included large air tankers laying fire retardant and specialist firefighters being winched into the remote site by helicopters to set up an irrigation system in the gorge to increase the moisture content of the ground fuels.
