Advice please

Hi, I am considering purchasing a FL 2, 2013 HSE Lux which has done 70k and was wondering hat I should be looking for when I go to view? In fact any advice about what to or what not to purchase would be really helpful.

Many thanks, Mark

England 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Santorini Black

welcome Thumbs Up

the HSE LUX is at the top of the tree for extras when it comes to FL2, All the bell and whistles....so make sure they all work. press every button, scroll through every menu on the screens and check it all does as its supposed to.

other than that check the service history is decent and complete, make sure the tyres are at least mid range and all wearing evenly. virtually all the common failure points were fixed in the 2013> models so you shouldn't have any issues with rear diff etc.

not sure where in Wales you live, but I would strongly recommend booking in with Austen at Bell Engineering (search for his name or company name on here) who is the recommended expert on here for FL2 transmissions. Get the diff oils and haldex serviced by him for a shade over £200 and save yourself the risk of expensive problems further down the line.

hope this helps

Rog

Roger’s advice on getting the diff and Haldex fluid serviced is 110% correct . Other systems using the same set up like Audi and VW have it as a service item where as LR say it’s not necessary . When you see the state of the fluids and filters at 50000 miles I’d say VW have it right .

Also have a good look at the rear suspension. , especially if the car has a tow bar . The rear struts are not a straight forward swop and it’s a big money job.

Obviously at 70,000 miles you will also want to be looking at the brake pads and rotors especially as a car of that spec will be automatic, I presume . I assume auto brake pads to last 20,000 and rotors 36,000 , but we live in hilly country and my Mrs would never command shift the auto box to descend a hill .

Have a look in the spare wheel well , make sure there is at least a space saver and jack .

Other than that I’d want to see full dealer service history to 3 years and at least a specialist independent up to date . 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

2016 Subaru Outback SE 2.0 diesel SE Premium Lineartronic Sold 2024 after 8 years and 80k miles . Best Car I ever owned !

The FL2 is a capable and sophisticated vehicle, i.e. complicated..

Make sure that it is coming from a reliable dealer, and has a good service history and warranty.

2013 / 14 models have most of the Evoque improvements to equipment and running gear, and as RogB says the HSE LUX (or Metropolis) have all the equipment you are likely to want. It's a nice car and a good motorway cruiser.

SD4 / Auto suits the car best. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 76k+ miles) (MY2015)

Thank you all so very much. I will take note of your advice and act on it accordingly. The dealer says it also has had the cam belt changed which seems a bit premature to me but what do I know Laughing

If you had the choice between a 20k FL 2 hse lux or a 50k FL 2 metropolis, which would you choose? (both 2013)

Thanks again...

You wouldn't get a 2013 Metropolis - they didn't arrive until 14MY.

Both the same vehicle, aside the Metropolis had tyre pressure sensors and different headlights (black inserts instead of reflectors). Again, it all depends on its service history. The last loaner my independent supplied me at service time last year was an 08 TD4 with 184k on it, and it went better than my SD4 with 54K on it!!

Look for the following.

Broken headlight clips. The lower clips break easily causing the whole headlight to wobble back and forth.
Rubbed off paint at the edges of the boot handle strip.
The diffs are still a problem. The haldex pump has probably been changed already.
Wheel arch trims. They look unsightly if falling off but cost about £50 to fix.
Heated window. Often only one side clears requiring new screen.
Door solenoids fail. Check all doors actually lock. Lock car then walk around and try each one.
Check underneath. If towbar fitted even the Land Rover one rusts badly.
Make the garage update the satnav.
Leather seats. Tear and damage easily.
Rattle from sunroof. Can come from bits of twig in the interior alarm sensor.
Tyre wear on near side front. Some people say normal but mine needed tracking done. Fine since.
Wobbly center brake light.
Double beep on lock unlock. Needs update.

Hi Welsh Wizard,

Might I enquire as to how much it's being advertised for?
My reason is I'm currently trying to make a counter offer to an insurance company... 2013 SE TD4 in Mauritius Blue [Written off]

... I purposely chose the LR2 with Land Rover extended warranty. 6y/160,000 km.
That way if there were any surprises... I was covered.

With All my cars I am over the top on maintenance, so imagine my surprise when
quite unexpectedly at 100,000 I needed an engine. Thank goodness for the warranty. Guy Pensa
