In many of its properties, lithium exhibits the same characteristics as do the more common alkali metals sodium and potassium. Thus, lithium, which floats on water, is highly reactive with it and forms strong hydroxide solutions, yielding lithium hydroxide (LiOH) and hydrogen gas.

Lithium shares many of the extremely active properties of Sodium and Potassium. (Look where it is in the periodic table)

In lots of ways I think it is more dangerous than petrol.

Perhaps we should be looking at trying to discover something which is relatively inactive and slow to catch fire, and which you can charge a vehicle to run say, 400 miles, in less than 5 minutes. I have an idea, and I think I will call it Diesel. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Stornoway Grey

Just seen a 2.0 manual DS with 56k miles for £15,580.
At this rate I should be able to trade my 07 gs in and walk away with cash in another year.

During my working life I learned to be very careful around anything that stored electricity as it was very dangerous to human beings.
So its not the inconvenience of charging electric cars that worries me, but all that stored electrical energy as the cars get older and less well maintained.
Higher voltages and lower internal resistances will be sought to make battery / electrical machines more efficient, and so they will become more and more dangerous.

Reading this reminded me of my last two years at work in the Bus industry. we were running many hybrids by then, both series systems and parallel systems. they both had power power packs of 600V DC + so some of us were put on a course certifying us to to work with high voltage DC systems. (1000V DC) we had to gain a Level 2 BTec.

Part of that was Elf & safety, we had to wear special rubber gauntlets when disconnecting the power packs but had to test them first. this was done by inflating them with a special pump and putting them in a bucket of water. No bubbles = safe to use.

And I always thought water and electricity wasn't a good idea Whistle I have some photos somewhere of the battery packs if anyone's interested Question 2007 TD4 XS The work horse that earns its up keep
