I'm blackmailing myself.

It would seem that I am blackmailing myself.

I've had a stream of Emails sent to myself from myself telling me I've been hacked from my own email account by an illiterate hacker who wants money off me or they will send videos of me watching dodgy web sites to all my contacts, as my webcam has also been hacked.
The email is laughable, esp as I dont have a webcam, and my internet settings are set so high I cant go anywhere dodgy.

How do they send me an email from myself to myself?

Have you had a good look at the full email address.

It most likely it is not exactly like your own, but enough to fool your own address book. I've had false ones, now and again, from what looks like friends or family, normally inviting me to click on a (dodgy) link.
A close look at their full address shows up an added bit to the extension.

Ignore it and block the senders address. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

I've had similar, block & delete. Don't click on anything. The other end of the spectrum is NO sender address. Treat as above.

Like you I don't have a webcam & don't have the time or inclination to watch anything dodgy. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I'm part of a hosting company, and hundreds of our customers have been receiving these. Most of them originate from Brazilian IP addresses, and they put your address in the reply-to field.

They may have received your details from data breaches at the likes of LinkedIN, Adobe etc, which is why you should never use your email password anywhere other than your email account.

Change your email password just to be on the safe side. Steve

Yep, change passwords. Never use the same one. Make them long and secure. I use a password manager called Last Pass.

The emails aren't actually from you. If you look at the header info it will be coming from another email but they make it appear to come from yours which is easy to do. I do something similar with my Gmail account to make it appear to be coming from my business email address.

Thanks for the tips.

The email account is actually a very old one which I only use on a very rare occasion. The login password is unique to the account, but hasn't been changed since it was set up in 2006 (but used to be used on other accounts a long time ago).

I've put that right, but have still received another spam email.

Its mildly amusing, and is probably the most basic and unsophisticated attempt at phishing that I've ever come across.
Like a lot of people, I've had the fake HRMC refund/underpayment email, the ITunes cancel your purchase email and various spoof banking 'trouble with your account' emails.

I have not had any of the fake banking phone calls that so many people have received. Updated- Waiting for a Scotland v England 6 Nations home win. 24th Feb 2018

about every 4-6 months I get my email address hammered with all manner of spam... performance enhancers, hot dates, loft insulation, warranties, etc etc etc

all go to my junk folder and I just highlight and delete them all every time.

I put the regular frequency of the mass spamming down to my email address being sold on around the world, so far ive been lucky and never had my passwords hacked on anything.

track and trace shows attempted logins to my email and other platforms from Russia, Asia, South America to name but a few

Getting calls this morning from a Liverpool number ( 01510284453 ) no body on other end!! Censored annoying wastes of oxygen. If it wasn't so bad it'd be funny.

Got one today from what looked like an old RAF friend.

it said
Dear all
I saw this today and I thought off you - "dodgy link"

When I looked at actual address it bore no relationship to his real one.

I deleted email immediately without clicking anything.

It is called Spear Phishing --- a link to Norton Security explanation.

You need similar to this. we have one it stops screens all calls, but allows the ones on your call list straight through.

I bought phones similar to those but I had to take off all the blocking things because no-one could get through without jumping through too many hoops. It was supposed to let through calls from the numbers in the phone book but it never did.
Their system will block calls but only AFTER you've received one and block it afterwards.
e.g.
Key features
Just press a button to block unwanted calls and the phone's BT call blocking will do the rest for you. MY13 Santorini Black SD4 HSE

Win win for BT, they sell the numbers and then sell the call blockers.

If you want to check if your email has been leaked in any of the website hacks recently (Adobe, LinkedIn, MySpace etc) it's well worth putting your email into this website:
https://haveibeenpwned.com/

It'll tell you where your email was leaked, and help explain why you might be getting random emails. For Sale: 2012 Freelander 2 GS (https://www.freel2.com/forum/post431941.html)
